The Murder of Emma Walker
Emma Walker was a high school student. She was a cheerleader at her school and honours student. Emma loved animals and hoped to become a neonatal nurse, her mum described her daughter as kind, big-hearted and independent, saying that Emma 'marched to her own drum.'
Emma was in a long term relationship with 18-year old William 'Riley' Gaul, the couple had been together for almost two years but Emma's family and friends did not approve of the relationship. Emma began to get doubts about the future of the relationship, she felt her and Riley were in different places in their lives and that it was time to move on and break up. Riley refused to accept the relationship was over and continuously harassed Emma despite her wishes to be left alone. Riley even threatened to commit suicide if Emma did not continue their relationship.
On 21st November 2016, Emma was found dead in her bed. She had been shot as she slept by someone outside of the home through the wall. Police were quickly informed that Emma had been struggling with an obsessive ex and immediately felt suspicious of Riley. Police also found that Riley's grandfather had reported one of his shotguns went missing the day before. They began to build their case.
In the aftermath of Emma's death, Riley posted multiple tweets in tribute to Emma. His Twitter bio read 'Living everyday through Emma Walker. I love you beautiful and I know you're in a better place now.'
The evening after Emma's death, Riley was arrested for Emma's murder. He was later indicted on charges of first-degree murder, stalking, theft, tampering with evidence, reckless endangerment and employed a firearm.
Riley pleaded not guilty and tried to claim he did not intend to kill Emma. Riley's defence claimed Riley meant to fire a shot into Emma's bedroom and scare her so that he could show up at her house as a 'hero.' His story was not believed and he was found guilty of intentionally killing Emma. Riley was sentenced to life in prison.
Emma, after the second break in training: Did you get anything done this weekend?
Boyd: No.
Emma: Okay, then at least you relaxed.
Boyd: Somehow also no.
Emma Walker and Riley Gaul seemed like the perfect match. Emma was a bubbly freshman on the cheerleading team, and Riley was a junior on the football team, whom friends described as a ‘’jokester’’ with a secret nerdy side to him, but little did they know, he also had a secret dark side. At first, Emma’s parents were impressed with their daughter’s new beau. Eventually, they began feeling concerned over the high school sweethearts’ relationship when they observed clear emotional abuse being directed at Emma from their online interactions. They banned Emma from ever speaking to him again, however she always found ways to sneak behind her parents’ back to see her boyfriend. But soon enough, Emma dumped Riley for good.
Riley didn’t take this rejection very well and fell into a deep depression after the breakup. He then concocted a ‘’clever’’ scheme to win his past lover back. He began stalking her and sending her anonymous texts claiming to be someone who kidnapped Riley and planned to kill him. Only she could save him by giving him a call. Emma, however, wasn’t falling for her ex’s shenanigans and didn’t take it too seriously. But one incident really spooked Emma. As she was walking to her Tennessee home, she noted a figure dressed in all black. Once she was inside her house, someone kept ringing the bell...it was the black figure. The terrified Emma promptly called her ex crying for his help and he rushed over to console her. Still, this stunt wasn’t enough to get Emma back, so Riley came up with a more sinister plan to up the ante.
On the night of November 21, 2016, he stole his grandfather’s 9mm Glock pistol and sneaked into Emma’s backyard. He fired two shots through the wall where her bedroom was, one of the bullets flying right into her head and instantly killing her. He subsequently fled the scene. The following morning, Emma’s mother found her daughter’s lifeless body in bed and immediately called 911. The Walker home turned into a crime scene and the police began investigating Riley. Although Riley maintained his innocence, he recruited two of his friends to help him dispose of the firearm in the Tennessee River. Little did he know, this was a set up, and his friends were voluntarily wiretapped. The police apprehended Riley at the river and detained him. Although he claimed he didn’t intend to kill or hurt Emma during the shooting and only hoped to scare her, jurors didn’t buy it. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 51 years.

“Maxwell planned a surprise; a Maxwell surprise usually isn't a good thing.” Drake moaned as he and Emma packed their suitcases. The court was going on another tour and it would be stopping in the states. Emma had asked if Drake wanted to try and make a trip to see Jake and Taylor, but he declined, they'd seen each other a lot over the past few months, and even though Drake had a sort of respect for him, he still wasn't his favorite person.
“It's Maxwell, he always means well. I'm sure it's some little excursion he planned for the group, I wouldn't worry.” Emma wrapped her arms around Drake and kissed his shoulder before finishing her own packing. This would have been her first year not in the states for Thanksgiving, a little odd but then again, since her parents had died it had never been that special to her. She usually ended up picking up a shift for a co-worker or going to a friend's Thanksgiving dinner with their family.
Ironically, they would be in the states for Thanksgiving, but no one at court even thought about it, it was an American holiday and none of them celebrated it, not even Drake even though he was half American.
*************
Tay and Jake planned on having a quiet Thanksgiving with just the two of them, Raj wasn't doing a feast this year, most of their friends would be doing stuff with their own families, they had decided not to fly to Louisiana this year, they just wanted a peaceful Thanksgiving.
*************
Maxwell had spoken to the pilot before they departed and was practically bouncing out of his seat trying to contain his excitement. Drake sighed pinching the bridge of his nose, Maxwell was driving him insane, everyone else had been fortunate enough to tune him out.
“Since no one else is going to ask, I will. Why are you so excited Maxwell?” He burst into a grin and waited until he had everyone's full attention.
“You do seem more excited than usual about your surprise.” Liam mused.
“We're going to San Diego to visit Jake and Taylor!” Drake's eyes widened, and he looked accusingly at Emma but saw she was just as surprised as he was.
“That's very gracious of them to entertain the whole court.” Maxwell's smile faltered for a moment, Olivia the only one who seemed to catch it.
“What did you do, Maxwell.” She narrowed her eyes at him, his smile fell, and he fidgeted uncomfortably under her icy gaze.
“You spoke to Jake or Taylor, right?” Maxwell's cheeks turned bright red and he looked away from the group who was now staring him down.
“Maxwell! It's Thanksgiving! You can't just show up unannounced with six people!” Emma snapped at him.
“Why didn't you ask us first, Maxwell? He's my cousin.” Drake dragged a hand down his face and everyone felt suddenly guilty for snapping at Maxwell because he was just trying to do something to nice for the group.
“We should do some damage control. Drake or Emma, I'm assuming you have a number for Jake and Taylor?” Emma nodded and pulled out her phone, one of the perks of being a noble was having private jets with Wi-Fi enabled. Emma took a deep breath and dialed Taylor's number.
*******
“Babe, your phone is ringing!” Jake called into the kitchen and Taylor came out, wiping her hands on a dishtowel, surprised to see Emma's name popping up on her screen.
“Hey Emma! What's up?” Jake looked up when he noticed Taylor had been quiet for a while. He watched her facial expressions going from a gentle smile to a frown, to surprise, to panic.
“No, that won't be a problem! We can definitely make room for you all.”
“Oh! Um okay, we'll see you then!” She hung up and Jake glanced up at her.
“What's going on princess?”
“The entire Cordonian court is going to be here for Thanksgiving in six hours! Get up! Help me start cooking!” She threw an apron at Jake, the panic in her voice clear, she was going to be stressing over this. So much for a quiet Thanksgiving.
“So how many people are we expecting exactly?” Jake knew he would probably regret asking, but he needed to know what he was up against.
“Eight people including us.” Jake looked at Taylor in disbelief.
“Did you say eight?”
“Yes!” She had thrown her hair up in a wild bun, digging through the fridge to see what else she could dig up for dinner.
“Start looking up recipes and tell me what ingredients we need!” She snapped at him.
Emmaline Walker from Intelligence, In the Company of Shadows Emma's deep blue gaze was often polite, interested, and amiable. Emma had greeted each trainee with a smile that had actually seemed genuine. The only two women Boyd ever had much interaction with at the Agency were his mother and Harriet so seeing Emma was almost a relief. Not all female agents were as extreme as the former two...
"Xylotrupes Gideon Cicadicae" by Emma Walker
16-year-old Emma Walker and 18-year-old William Riley Gaul from Tennessee had been dating for several months when she decided to call the relationship off. Unable to accept Emma’s decision, William stalked her incessantly for two months before his stalking reached calamitous heights. On the 20th of November, 2016, William took his grandfather’s gun and drove to Emma’s home. Once here, he stood outside her bedroom and watched her sleep. He then produced the stolen gun and shot Emma through her bedroom window.
The following morning, Emma’s parents were horrified to discover her deceased in her bed, saturated by her own blood. Several hours later, William professed his love for Emma on his social media accounts, completely unaware that police had already suspected him in her murder.
He was released on $1 million bail on 31 January, 2017, and shall remain free until his trial.
