Envy by Gregg Olsen - Review
Okay so I'm going to be straight up - I'm addicted to buying books. If I see a book which is cheap and looks decent I will buy it. And that's what happened with this book. It was in the discount pile for $5 down from the normal book price. I'd been lusting after this book for a while because of it's cover so I was quick to hand over my money.
Summary of the book:
The story starts with the death of Katelyn, a fifteen year old girl living in the small historic town of Port Gamble. It's presumed that she committed suicide - due to the troubled history of the girl, but twins Hayley and Taylor Ryan, ex-friends of Katelyn's, believe otherwise. As they dive deeper into the events leading up to Katelyn's death, things are brought up which neither of them were expecting. It's the first book in the "Empty Coffin" Series, with the sequel being Betrayal. Both books are based of actually things that have happened - as told in the back of the book, on the "Truth in Fiction" page.
I'm not quite sure how I feel about this book, even though I closed it for the last time about two days ago and have been reading it on and off for a while now. There were parts which I really didn't like - whether it be the content or the way it was written - but there were also parts which I really enjoyed. I found, however, that I wasn't emotionally attached to any of the characters or events until I had 30 pages left, and that rather annoyed me.
However, I must give credit to the ending which tied up lose ends well and held quite a bit of action which I wasn't expecting at all. Somehow, Gregg Olsen managed to end the story in a way which I hadn't predicted at all - and proved me wrong in all the times I spent silently yelling at characters about what was happening.
I'm now left with Amazon open, contemplating whether I should buy the next book or not.
So, I would say if you enjoy YA murder mysteries, or you're not into gore but still want to be kept on your toes a bit - this book is for you.
