SERIES - Descendants of the Kings of Asturias: Ermesinda was the only known daughter of Pelayu, King of Asturias from c. 718-22.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
ERMESINDA was born around 720-25, probably in the region where the Astures lived, that became the Kingdom of Asturias around 718-22.
She was the only daughter of Pelayu, King of Asturias and his wife Gaudiosa. But it is not certain if when she was born her father was already the Asturian Monarch or not.
When her father acceded to the Asturian throne around 718-22, he founded the ASTUR-LEONESE DYNASTY, of whom she was a member.
Probably before 737 she was married to ALFONSU, likely a Cantabrian noble. He was a son of Pedro, a possible Duke of Cantabria and his wife, whose name is not known. They had three recorded children (check the list below).
Her father died in 737 and her brother was elected to become the new Asturian Monarch, as King Favila.
However her brother also died, unexpectedly, in 739. And as he did not have any children her husband was considered by the Asturian nobility to become their new Monarch.
So soon after her brother's death, her husband was elected by the nobility and became Alfonsu I, King of Asturias.
Because of her genre she could not be considered to become Queen Regnant of Asturias so she took the role of QUEEN CONSORT OF ASTURIAS.
The death of the Queen Consort of Asturias was not recorded, but she probably died at Cangas de Onís, the capital of the Kingdom of Asturias.
