I really like the part in the movie verse in which Thomas was the “source” for the Right Arm. Spy!Thomas is such an interesting concept to explore.

There is no doubt that the time Thomas worked for WCKD had a profound impact on the present and future. But once he ends up in the maze, regardless of whether he gets his memories back, that part of him becomes the past he determines to break from.

Whereas in AUs where Thomas remains in WCKD as a spy for the Right Arm, his cover as a WCKD member is still an ongoing part of his life. His mentality and the way other people perceive him would be very different.

For Thomas, with his memories intact, he would be even more guilt-ridden than in the canon. It doesn’t help when he has to live a double life constantly. People close to him get a facade he puts on. The people he fights for is an elusive radio wave connection(most sees him as an enemy). This mismatch means he has no one to confide in. Life would be far less complicated if he had entered the maze instead.

For the Gladers, there is a legend they admire: a person who risks their own life to provide the Right Arm crucial intelligence, who freed them from the maze. There is also a “WCKD’s favourite” whom they disdain, the person who built the maze that trapped them for years. However, little do they know those two polar opposites are the same person.

This situation won’t last forever. Perhaps there is a rescue mission; the Right Arm may be ready to take down WCKD; or his cover is blown up at a later time. It is when everyone gets to know who he truly is–in a different circumstance.

Alex Keller takes a swallow of champagne as he scans the gallery.

She's standing in front of an Albrecht Dürer in a dress of stunningly fine emerald silk. The skin from her nape to an inch above the slope of her lower back is almost completely exposed to the world.

Art standing in judgement of art, she shifts her weight from one stilettoed heel to the other.

He finishes his flute and swaps it for another as a caterer passes to his right.

Here we go.

As he approaches, she's completely at ease, as though she were expecting him.

An offhand jest passes over his lips, something about finally arriving in the Emerald City.

She rolls her eyes, but her nipples immediately harden, straining visibly under the silky green fabric. He smiles.

"Took you long enough," she mutters.

He swallows a sip hastily, bubbles burning more than the previous draught. He licks the inside margin of his lips.

"To what?"

"To find me," she replies just above a whisper. She points to some vague detail in the painting, as though explaining something to the interloper. He nods his head and extends a hand to gesture toward another part of the work.

Alex's words hesitate on his tongue. Obessesive mission preparation always gives a false sense of familiarity. Comfort even. Something's wrong here.

"I'm not your enemy. Despite what you've been made to believe," she continues, lifting the flute to her lips. It's then that he realizes she's pretending to drink.

"I don't--"

"Listen. In eight minutes, I'll act inebriated. You'll put your hand at my waist, as though helping me. I'll lead us out of here before the tenth minute. "

"What happens in ten?" He swallows, trying hard to maintain a relaxed posture.

She turns her head to face him, feigning laughter.

"It'll be best to find out from the papers in the morning."

At a loss, he asks the obvious question.

"Where will we go?"

"Your hotel room."

He lifts his flute, then lowers it again, uncertain for the first time in months.

"How did you--"

"Eleventh floor of the Paloma. Incredible view of the arts district. Your superiors were generous this time."

He glances at his watch as casually as he can muster. Four minutes.

"What...will we do until the news breaks tomorrow?"

She turns to face him fully, sliding a hand up the lapel of his tuxedo.

"I'm sure we'll think of some way to fill the time."

The SleepAw.ai AU

As human beings, we all share a few common grounds: eating, drinking, and sleeping -- in fact, sleep is one of the few things in life that you can’t live without. This simple fact makes it one of the best targets for curious minds in design (only so many people find repeated use for a can opener, but a bed is universal, and therefore lucrative). 

Character A sets their mind on integrating the most important invention of the century into one of the oldest inventions time had to offer: an artificially driven mattress that changes according to the needs of the user in a split second. The invention was lovingly called "SleepAw.ai" and was a massive success, being purchased by the thousands, installed in hospitals, hotels, etc., all for a relatively reasonable price. They’d done it: they’d given the world a truly good night’s rest.

As with any invention, though, it soon got away from them. Stockholders became disinterested after purchases began to flatline (after all, where would the profit come from after everyone already had the mattress other than routine maintenance?). Marketing and business analysts came to the conclusion that if BMW could get away with it, so could they. The revolutionary SleepAw.ai became rife with microtransactions that locked away beloved features (heating, tweaks, lumbar support, etc.) behind a paywall. As it turns out, you can put a price on a good night’s rest.

Months after the update is rolled out, customers begin reporting worsened sleep, including not being able to fall asleep quickly and waking up too early. This pattern and reports continued, almost in a rhythm, across the board. In a fit of rage, Character A infiltrates their own labs, performing digital espionage to figure out exactly what was happening to their pride and joy. 

TL;DR - Character A discovers that the restless nights of their customers is due to a new type of ad software, meant to target the first and last REM cycles that could have been achieved in a normal night’s rest. As it turns out, the company had made a deal with caffeine-based and sleeping pill companies to share the resulting profits of customers buying pills to sleep, needing caffeine to stay awake, and purchasing new SleepAw.ai’s after thinking theirs must be defective. The unfortunate reality of capitalism and greed may have never been so clear.

 “You’re running late,” Rebecca teases, kissing him goodbye in their kitchen. “Have a good day at work, love.”

 “You too, darlin’.”

 Ted barges into the Welton Agency gripping the straps of his backpack, takes the stairs by two, and bounds into the office with an apologetic knock-a-doodle-doo. Beard and Roy are already parked on the couch, Keeley’s hand hovering over the speaker as Ted plonks himself down in the middle. The crackle of static clears up, and Ted’s favourite voice in the whole wide world greets them with the customary phrase and oh-so-familiar lilt.

 “Good morning, Angels.”

 “Good morning, Rebecca.”
