Quick appreciation post for Eva Evergreen: Semi-Magical Witch by Julie Abe

It’s just really good, y’all. If you like Studio Ghibli, particularly Kiki’s Delivery Service, you will love this book.

It’s magical, heartwarming, and beautifully written. Seriously, one of the biggest similarities I found between reading this book and watching a Miyazaki movie was wanting to eat all the food in it!

All of the characters are wonderfully written—it didn’t matter how much of a side character they were, everyone came to life on the page. From Eva’s closest friends, Charlotte and Davy, to the townsfolk of Auteri like Trixie & Trina the corn and cloudberry sellers, Soma the ship crew leader, and Ami the florist, every character shone through in Julie Abe’s writing.

The story was well-paced and full of laughter as well as cry-worthy parts, and Eva’s growth as a semi-magical witch had me smiling from ear to ear. I absolutely loved this book, and will be waiting for the next book in anticipation (August 2021?).
