The genes of culture: a conversation

- Politics is a sensitive issue. Manipulation and selfishness are always present. And generally our biological instincts make us choose, not the wisest leaders, but the most animal; instinctively, biologically fit.

- Yes, but why is that so difficult to know? To incorporate it, into our decisions and daily actions in the world, to realize it. Look, you and I just pointed it out concisely in ten minutes ;)

- It is because reasoning like this, is different from reasoning with the mass. And the politician speaks to the crowd, to social groups.

- Okay, what does the mass answer to? What messages are preferred, which patterns most repeated?

- Biological messages. The leader of the pack. I understand that Trump used as an argument the poor health of his opponent. No pack follows a sick leader.

- Yeah, the symbolism is bad

- In addition, everyone prefers a rewarding lie, to a compromising truth.

- I notice this guy a lot; this recurring pattern is still preferentially firing neurons:

- These narratives form the deep grammar of culture. And this troublesome little avatar—is it the inner child inside all of us? And eternal love is motherhood, is inextricable from our humanity.

- So on some level, it works because it's touching on a deeper truth? Like something remembered, that we're always trying to circle back around to.

- Claro! It responds to different facets of our human condition.

- Christ Pantokrator, Christ the Judge, the king. This iconography is modeled on images of Jupiter from the preceding Roman period, who in turn is derived from Zeus. The cultural “grammar” is the same, the subject has changed but not the iconography. And during the Renaissance, for example, we see classicism spread like a visual virus, in relation to the medieval style that precedes it. In that case, the subject remains the same, but the visual style changes; like a memetic overwriting over something more structural. Culture is constantly overwriting itself; memes competing with each other for dominance, like a syntactic form of evolution. But underneath, what is their deeper structure? And do we see this playing itself out in our own time, in its current forms?
