Hate the whole "women peel their facial skin every month with their periods" gaslighting trend bc it's not obvious like goncharov. They all take it so seriously which is difficult for me because ~autism~ i can't FUCKING tell when they aren't being real
This week’s skincare spotlight is The Ordinary, a Canadian skincare brand that has recently risen to the forefront of the beauty scene because of their unbeatable price points and sleek packaging. I ordered four products: the hyaluronic acid + b5 serum, the AHA 30% + BHA 2% peeling solution (which looks creepily like blood in a bottle), the natural moisturizing factors + HA surface hydration formula, and the caffeine solution, which I’ll review below!
Hyaluronic Acid + B5
Grade: 7/10
I really wanted to love this product. I’ve been using glossier’s “super bounce” serum for months now, which features the same combination, and I adore it. Problem is, I’m running out, and when I saw The Ordinary’s serum priced at $6.80 (!!!) compared to glossier’s $28 (which is still very reasonable for a serum), I had to try this. And I have to give it a passing grade, because it works, albeit not as well as its glossier counterpart. My issue with this product was the sticky consistency. It feels tacky on your hands when you go to apply it, and the sticky feeling lasts on your face for upwards of 10 minutes. It eventually sinks in, but it does leave my skin feeling a little tight. I’ll definitely use this when I run out of super bounce, but if you’re looking to try out a hyaluronic acid serum, I’d definitely splurge for this guy.
AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution
Grade: 6/10
Okay, effectiveness aside, how cool does this product look? It’s such an unusual color (and yes, it does look like your entire face is covered in blood when applied, but I’m kind of okay with it). Trouble is, the product didn’t seem to do much for me. I applied it as recommended and left it on for 10 minutes, and I didn’t really notice any change after washing it off. It’s important to note also that this product is not recommended for anyone with sensitive skin, as it does contain a high concentration of free acids! Additionally, the back of the bottle says to limit sun exposure after using this mask. It didn’t break me out or anything, but this seems like a lot of risk for a product that didn’t have much effect. Still, it does look creepy-cool, and I’ll definitely hang on to this at least until Halloween!
Surface Hydration Formula: Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA
Grade: N/A
I’ll be honest -- I just haven’t had a chance to give this product a fair test run. I’ve tested it on my hand a couple of times, and the consistency is okay. It takes a little while to sink in, so there’s some white residue on the skin for a couple of minutes. My skin definitely felt softer after, but I’ve used better moisturizers, even at a similar price point. It seems perfectly okay, but I have moisturizers I’m much more excited about, so I haven’t tested this as much as I should have!
Caffeine Solution
Grade: 11/10
If you buy anything from The Ordinary, make it this serum. Within one week of consistent (AM and PM) use, my under eye bags are nearly gone. Under eye creams and serums can be crazy expensive, so I was thrilled to find something so effective for just $6.70! Seriously, everyone needs this product. Skip one or two coffee runs and buy this instead - you’ll look even more awake!
