Okay so I might as well talk about this
I’m writing a Fangs of Fortune Yuanyi modern au
I know modern aus aren’t that popular, but I like them, I like putting characters in environments different than the canon. And what I am doing specifically with this au is basically creating a story parallel to the canon story. I want it to have the same story beats and emotional beats as the original but translated into modern world situations.
The plot is Zhao Yuanzhou was a lab researcher 8 years ago but there was an explosion which killed 5 people, including Wen Xiao’s mentor. Zhuo Yichen’s brother and father who were in the management took the blame and it was the end of their careers in the science field. Zhuo Yichen blames Zhao Yuanzhou for all of it. In present day, Zhao Yuanzhou gets hired as a new teacher at a university where Zhuo Yichen is doing his Phd. He gets appointed as the supervisor of Zhuo Yichen’s research.
Yes it has Teacher Zhao Yuanzhou and Student Zhuo Yichen and age gap.

wen xiao takes on his mischief. even young she was a fiery thing, prone to biting but if you distracted her enough to feed her curiosity you would be saved. and now free (mostly, lowk a sucker for the bai ze order not taking responsibility for its own damage) from the debilitating state from her early adult years, she uses her energy for her job ofc but also!! being a menace to every demon and human around her.
her adventures were a form of mischief, sure, but more than anything they were a controlled rebellion; that she was still breathing, and it hurt sometimes but she is here; that she could do what she promised her master to do, even powerless.
now, they are still a declaration of life, but more a celebration; to share with a ghost, or whichever soul is her poor target. small demons get teased until they hide behind a young dragon for safety (he's so weak for small young beings asking for help); bigger, more dangerous ones get a bit of teeth both as an understanding and a warning. and humans, mostly from the bureau staff, cannot really do anything as she lays on the lap of their commander as they nervously report to a stoic woman while wen xiao preens on her throne.
zhuo yichen gets his penchant for self-sacrifice. it was always there by his own creation--he was a protector, ready to stand before anyone that needed it--and somewhat misguided nurture, but recently it took an edge. missions when he still helped with the bureau that while not impossible were incredibly physically and mentally challenging; hits that he knew he could survive; a teeny tiny bit push more than he should of energy, of effort, of himself.
it brought on his first big fight with wen xiao and pei sijing, uncharacteristically loud and cutting; another certain character stuck to his nature and did not say a single demeaning or sarcastic word, just stood silent, staring, and then left. both hurt him more than he could say, but zhuo yichen could not tell them that this was right; it was what he deserved, what he needed, what he owed (him, them, himself).
sometimes it took a softer edge: he would gather in his arms the small demons unlucky enough to be in wen xiao's mischief radar, or set himself in her line of sight and suffer happily under her loving wrath; bashfully present himself at the bureau when pei sijing needed a break from handling everything; shyly share his space, his energy, his dreams with li lun to see the life he's had, the places he's seen (with someone else, maybe with him--together with who whe's looking for--in the future).
pei sijing took a more physical memory: his outer coats. their journey together opened her eyes in many ways; from such quiet and lonely days, to so much sound and colors and warmth. she already owes zhao yuanzhou a lot, and honors his memory in a small shrine on the path between her office and bedroom that zhuo yichen carefully accommodated for her; respecting and trusting the faithful dragon in his journey, she set it as a placeholder for her everyday tales to reach him; he is next to her brother, to bai jiu's, to ying lei's.
she heard that the coat he wore when he died left with him, but surprisingly, they found the rest split between his villa and the bureau. wen xiao took a single one, zhuo yichen adamantly refused (wen xiao and her had an inkling why) and his potted plant made a disgusted face at the suggestion. but pei sijing, she couldn't let them go. she started first looking at them; then, caressing the fine embroidery, the details that only came with care and money she didn't know how that sly ape had; and one day, it was cold. pei sijing hesitated for one second, then grabbed it and started her day.
it drags a bit when she walks; she is significantly shorter by height but not in pride, so she wears it somehow. she ignores the stares, nods at the compliments, and is silent about the warmth she can't explain. when wen xiao sees her in the dark red one with fur lining, her eyes well up and requests she walk in front of her for their journey to her home. when pei sijing asks why, she says because she feels safe looking at her. and pei sijing can now put a name to the warmth.
li lun refuses to acknowledge any influence, any change in him; and, granted, it is hard to see, even more impossible to believe. but he has perfected, in his own way, how to make himself small to others. saying it just like that takes off the implications of how manipulative it is, but it is still something that to li lun's disgust, stayed with him as he saw zhu yan, his match so mighty and dangerous, fold himself in half for people beneath him.
when he caught himself doing so for the first time, it was for a small butterfly demon, so afraid and shaking from the difference in strength (he did recently sprout, but having your own personal watering fountain with ancient powers sure helps. but do not tell him that). before, it was a sight that would make him huff and move on; every realm had the powerful and the weak, he could not control that. but now, after all he'd done in the name of his home and in the high of a broken heart, and all ending in flames, there was an uncomfortable feeling in his chest.
so he folded his power; folded himself to be eye to eye with the small demon. he refused to placate a false sense of security, of theater, but he could show to be what he once swore: a protector, and take pride in it.
only the babies, the ones he was so ready to sacrifice in his braided anger and grief, could see this side of him. but he would not limit it to them, just on a... different brand: slightly coquettish weakness for zhuo yichen to make him do what he wanted, avoidant minimal efficiency to whatever the goddess demanded, just enough of approachable to not raise alarm in the bureau to then scare the members and to get pei sijing out for a fight. he refuses to give space in his trunk to a distant laugh he could hear when he grins a bit too wide when it works his way.
