#38 in my "Neighbourhood Grocery Stores" series: Fat Choy Food Market. This store closed last year and the space is still for lease. Sadly, the proprietor, Stephen Lam, passed away from cancer in 2013. People affectionally called him "Fat Choy." Interestingly, Fat Choi is a rare delicacy named for its resemblance to hair. It translates literally from Cantonese as "hair vegetable." After a 5.5 hour drive to Vegas, a dinner at Fat Choy was in order! I tried something new (at least for me since I always get the Pork Belly Bao), Fat Choy Fries! Fat choy is a terrestrial cyanobacterium that is used as a vegetable in Chinese cuisine. When dried, the product has the appearance of black hair.
