The Tainted Cup
The Tainted Cup combines a beautifully designed fantasy world (from the creator of the Foundryside series) and the sensibilities of a classic mystery duo like Holmes and Watson or Poirot and Captain Hastings. Luckily, fans of either genre will enjoy the book as the two genres are seamlessly entwined. “A large clutch of trees had spontaneously grown from within the deceased, tearing him apart…

in many ways, I can't trust that a man might genuinely respect me. I can't trust that I will be able to tell his respect from his lust for me. I can't trust that I won't crave his respect anyways, or failing to have it, that I won't settle for his infatuation either.
This is a lesson I'm taught with bruises time and time again. It's a lesson I've bared witness to on other women's faces and hidden under their sleeves. Mothers and sisters and friends and coworkers. Fathers and brothers and friends and coworkers.
For every role there is a betrayal, because in spite of myself I have trusted. Maybe I grew lax or naive. Maybe I thought my veneer of professionalism would spare me the grief of mourning my trust for a man. I'm the last to know it's beyond my control each time. I didn't think he was like that.
And it's really that I'm tired of writing about men. I managed to avoid it for so long, yet we're back here again. But where else do I put this? Where do I find reprieve? Tell me and I'll bring the rest of them with me. I'll bring her, and my sisters, and my colleagues who are scared to report, and my friends who never told a soul, all of them.
And I'll trust again of course. There are men who have proven me wrong. And I'll be bruised again. There's no helping it. I can't bring myself to withdraw completely. Maybe there's a better way. Maybe I'll find it.

It’s 1965 and war is still considered a patriotic duty. The day she joins up, her family receives notification that Frankie’s brother is dead. But Frankie is still obligated to go. So, she does. Vietnam is chaotic and…

The Ghost Orchid
Another year, another great buddy police/psychologist procedural for Milo and Alex. I look forward to reading this series and The Ghost Orchid is another great entry. Two naked bodies are found murdered in a middle-class backyard in the LA adjacent and mega-wealthy Bel Air enclave. Which one was the intended victim, and which was collateral damage? The man is a playboy wastrel from a rich Italian…
