The boyknight is impetuous. In an episode devoted to stringing Mordred up for all he's worth, it's quietly revealed that Gwen had already passed her judgement. Impulsive. The trait she gives him is in direct reference to his sense of duty towards Arthur. And that appraisal comes after Gwen tells him, You told me once that Mordred had a strong sense of duty. Arthur parrots her own words back at her, You also told me he was impetuous, and she relents. The strained admission is put away almost as quickly as it appears.

For someone so green to knighthood, why does he draw out such a strong sense of unease? The last she saw of him, Mordred was a sick, newly orphaned boy, and she’d been one of those closely involved in his escape. Now, he has returned, despite all their best efforts to trebuchet him away from trouble, and is running headlong into the thick of it with none other than her husband. If already proven to be loyal, why doubt his impassioned nature? If steadfast, why imply he has been hasty in choosing to do so?

Maybe, the word is less of a pointed remark on Mordred, than an assessment of Arthur’s demeanor itself. This sense of urgency to raise the boy high, to shape him in Arthur’s image. The haste. It’s possible that Gwen recognized that same fervor in him from the eyes of another, one she had witnessed when Mordred had been Morgana’s prodigal son instead. She had opened a line of questioning then too, You’re risking so much for this boy. You don’t know anything about him. The answers she’d gotten then in response were as vaguely attached as the fondness she’d glimpsed in Arthur for the boy that very morning. You don’t even know his name.

There’s an instinctive wariness in her to this sudden affection. It always precedes a deep desire to mold the boy, knight or druid, into someone more like themselves, Arthur or Morgana. Wanting to rescue a child from a terrible fate, or a brother-in-arms from certain death, is not the issue at hand. It’s merely the impetus that drives that initial kindness off a cliff and crashing into the rocks below. To strike while the iron is hot. To revise him into someone reckless, courageous, and foolish, all at once. To do it quickly before the shape is set. And Gwen is all too familiar with that impetuous desire, to mistake it for true introspection instead.
