Sims In Bloom: Generation 3 Pt. 5 (Bernard's Helpful Hacker)

Lady Mimsy loved to visit the Psydeds in the Whispering Glen. Pulled as she was from the only life - and afterlife - she'd ever known, Mary Sue, Lilith, Angela, and their children descended from her dear sister, Maude. They were family, and having family in a strange new home brought Mimsy immense comfort - especially with Bernard feeling low and their finances dwindling.

"Bernard started painting again," Mimsy reported to Mary Sue. While Albie danced to music from the Grimophone with Mary Sue's grandchildren, Jasper and Maude, Mimsy greeted the Psydeds' cat, Patches. "Or I should say, he finally finished a new piece. It's beautiful."

"Is that not good? He's been struggling to find inspiration," said Mary Sue, noting the look of worry on Mimsy's face as Felix and Lilith joined them in the sitting room.

"A royal envoy from Ondarion paid a visit and had him thinking it was for the Darongs of Dambele, but when she wouldn't take the finished work his doubt crept back in. She just told him to keep painting and researching the royal families of Simlandia if he wants to rejoin the nobility in a new ancestral home."

The Psydeds knew the Shallots - mostly Bernard - wanted to return to their privileged life among the nobility. Mimsy was a capable chef and caretaker for their son, but life as lady of the manor was the only life she knew. If Bernard wanted a knighthood, she wanted it for them, too.

"He's gone to meet our friends, the Gordons, in Willow Creek as we speak. He says they'll help him tour the archives."

"The Gordons are always up for a quest," reasoned Felix with a laugh. "I'm sure they'll help Bernard find whatever he's looking for."

Angelic Albie was polite, outgoing, and well-behaved; the Psydeds took no issue with his presence around Jasper and Maude. And with gossip out of the way, the families enjoyed the rest of their afternoon together in the Glen.

But her husband's impromptu trip to the Goth Archives was never far from Mimsy's mind.

By the time Bernard arrived in Willow Creek, he'd mulled over the envoy's refusal to take his painting for an entire plane trip from Ravenwood. Though the piece made him feel more confident in his work than he had in years, she hadn't even looked at it before turning it down.

But he was here to conduct important research and pushed self-doubt from his mind. There was always plenty of time for that.

He was surprised to meet the head of the Goth family himself after Heather mentioned his husband had recently died, but Mortimer had been looking for distractions. "I haven't been sleeping well, so I might as well fill my time with research I enjoy. I can let you know where to find anything on the noble history of the Darongs, Capps, Thebes, and families connected to them by even the faintest degree." He added a wistful smile as a memory hit. "My husband used to call it an obsession, collecting books as I did, but he always let me indulge myself."

"Should I find what I need, I'll be forever indebted to you both."

"What do you need?" Conrad pressed.

Bernard laughed. "That is a very good question. Perhaps we should start with the Smoogle engine people talk about. I'm afraid I don't know how to use it very well."

"We can help with that," Heather assured him. "But all you need to do is click the Smoogle icon and then type in whichever family you want to search first."

"How does the typewriter send words to the television?"

"The keyboard sends signals to the monitor through wires, like a radio or a telephone," explained Conrad, but Bernard was still mostly confused. He was just happy that it worked as they said it would. He found plenty of information on the nobles of Simlandia, just as the envoy advised.

But one particular website was locked, and Bernard grimaced at the computer in confusion. "Who locks a website filled with important information? It says I need to pay a subscription to read this article." (Not a fan of news and academic journal paywalls over here! Bernard's face though? 😂 Clearly he agrees with me.)

Heather frowned. "I shouldn't say this because my husband is a cop and he's standing right there, but I can hack a paywall pretty easily."

Bernard looked at her cluelessly. "What do those words mean?"

"It means she's going to bypass the subscription window and I'm going to look the other way," said Conrad.

So Heather helped Bernard hack his way through an afternoon of research, and Mortimer even showed him how to use a database to find books inside the massive archives. This led him to one called The Duchess Diaries: A History of Nobility.

As he flipped through the dusty tome, an elegant but tarnished silver key dropped to the ground at his feet. He flipped to the back of the book, this time finding a golden key inscribed with the Capp emblem tucked into the space between the binding and leather cover.

"Ah, I hadn't had a chance to read through that one yet," said Mortimer.

"I found another key in the old estate we moved into in Ravenwood," Bernard explained. "If these are anything like that one, they won't unlock any doors, either."

"You should keep them, then," said Mortimer warmly. "Perhaps the true power of these keys comes in finding the complete set."

Bernard didn't know if the keys were what the envoy had sent him here to find, but he didn't want to leave Mimsy and Albie alone in their broken old home for long. He left Willow Creek with a head full of new information, and Mortimer Goth on speed dial if he needed more help.

As he walked through the front door of their dilapidated home in Ravenwood, he passed a new hutch displaying a framed family portrait in the foyer. Placing the new keys, the sound of the grand piano drew him to the living room, where he found Mimsy playing while their son danced nearby.

"Papa, did you fly a plane? I want to fly, too!" Albie called excitedly, and Bernard smiled. Lifting him off the ground, he kissed his son's mop of blonde hair, just like his mother, as they listened to Mimsy play together. Trained from a young age on the refined instrument, her fingers never missed the right key.

As much as he didn't know where they'd get money to live the life they wanted, Albie was happy and nothing mattered more.

(Bernard has the Hates Children trait but never, ever gets tense around Albie. Just other people's kids. I hate that trait but I kinda love this.)

Soon, Mimsy took their four-year-old upstairs to hug his stuffies before bed, and Bernard found his wife had made even more changes to the house while he'd been in Willow Creek. Their bedroom door had been replaced by a bookshelf that acted like a hidden passage, and Bernard chuckled to himself.

One of Mimsy's favourite childhood memories was racing through her parents' home and finding her eccentric father's secret tunnels. She always wished for a door like this at Von Haunt Estate, and Bernard could see she'd finally done it.

He didn't mind the change, either - anything was better than their home's current condition - but further surprises awaited him beyond the book-covered door.

Mimsy entered the room in her nightgown, smiling at Bernard in the luxurious new sleeping robes she'd found for him. He nodded when she entered, but kept his gaze fixed on the painting on the wall.

"Do you like the updates I made around the house? I don't care if the envoy didn't want your painting, Bernard. I love it and I think you can make a lot of money selling your work to anyone - even the Darongs!"

"The updates are beautiful, sweetheart," Bernard assured her. "I just don't know what you see in my work that no one else does. And these robes seem more luxurious than we can afford. I still need to raise enough to replace all the holes in the roof and the floors."

"You will, my darling. I'll never lose faith in you." She kissed his hands with devotion. "I know they look expensive, but you deserve the very best attire if you're going to convince the nobles to reinstate your lordship, and Lilith helped me find a great deal online."

Bernard smiled gratefully. "It's all wonderful, angel. I don't know how I deserve a wife as supportive as you, especially in a crumbling manor like this one. Both you and Albie deserve more, but that envoy could be sending me on a wild goose chase for reasons I can't begin to understand."

"The envoy may be suspicious, but she's right that your work could be our way to impress the nobility. After all, your work impresses me."

Bernard chuckled at his wife's coquettish grin, her pale cheeks flush as they leaned in closer. Moving to the antique wooden bed, the lord and lady of Old Ravenwood Estate made the most of their suddenly romantic evening - as if the romantic power of the Capps descended upon their hallowed home through that golden key.

Facing their financial troubles could wait...at least until morning. ->

NOTE: I didn't think the Gordons would be involved at all in this one, but when Bernard followed the quests to the Willow Creek Achive (what I call the Goth Archives in my save), Heather and Conrad were already there autonomously. I forced Mortimer over and he was happy to stay, even though he's dealing with a lot of grief right now, like sleeping on the living room sofa to avoid crying himself to sleep in the bed he shared with his departed husband. 😔

Later that evening, Eva got a call from Felix, the ghost she met at the festival, who invited her to the Full Moon Revelry. They joined the other revelers at the bonfire, took a dip together in the river, shared their first kiss, and woohoo'd in a nearby crypt. It was oddly romantic, and Eva went home hoping she'd see Felix again.

Elsewhere Cassie and Struan attempt to gain ground with Patchy, Cassie makes a startling discovery - and Struan asks her to maybe… do an activity together -

- so it’s a panicked run from Cassie to a woohoo locale.

As both their permissions have ‘yes’ to woohoo with fellow contestants - and my settings are at ‘moderate’ so that you need a reasonably high relationship with the other sim for woohoo to successfully occur - I accepted it.

Looks like it was a good time?

Delphine wants the basil to know what’s up! And Lilac - maybe it’s best not to joke about being in a simulation to the PARANOID pixel?

Fortunately Jerrod seems to think it’s all in good fun. Far too ridiculous to believe, right? Utter nonsense.

As there’s by now some leftovers in the fridge (and Lilac’s infamous cooler in the corner), we spare Cassie from cooking the evening meal.

Plus it’s time to par - oh gosh, Lilac.

I can’t let you go looking like that. Let’s grab something else from CAS.

For Lilac’s final mandated friendly interaction, she takes a selfie with each sim. Below we have:

Our lil witch takes on the keg once more aaand seems to succeed - until she doesn’t. Milk may indeed be the safer option, Cassie.

The party is… weird. Everyone is determined to gather in the kitchen for some reason, so once again the Watcher is forced to sacrifice her screencaps and activate the social club.

I agree, Jerrod. This sucks.

(In my playtesting save, the group had a great time and stayed in the room where all the fun stuff was - I really don’t know what was different for this crew.)

If only you had joined us, Patchy.

Too late, Felix. The party’s over - and that’s assuming it ever truly began.

While everyone else sleeps, Lilac (who has the SELDOM SLEEPY reward trait) sought out reassurance from Patchy that he would be more professional, should this roll ever come around again. And that is where we will leave Household One for this round.

(Note: for this round’s table, I will collate everyone’s scores after the final day of Household Three then send the bottom three home. The households will once again be randomised for the next round. Therefore hypothetically everyone from this group could make it through - or all three eliminated sims could come from here - depending on the rest of the round.)

The Surprise

Simeon: Is everything ok? I came as fast as I could when I got your message.

L.: Come with me: I need to show you something.

Simeon: Wait, why are we headed toward my house?

L.: Sssh...No questions!

Everyone: Surprise!

Simeon: W-What? This IS a surprise! You are all here! Even Felix!

Felix: What's a little necromancy between friends, hm? Happy birthday!

Morgyn: Did you suspect anything?

Simeon: Not at all! I had Grace and Darrel in class all afternoon and they didn't let anything slip!

Felix: Maybe it's because none of us were made privy to the fact there was going to be a party until an hour before it happened!

Grace: Ooo! You should've seen what we accidentally summoned before calling down Felix...It's all good, though! Lucky for us, Darrel took exorcism as an extra curricular!

Darrel: Good night, everyone! Thanks for the party! Happy birthday, old man!

Simeon: Yeah, yeah! Get off my lawn already, you meddling kids!

Morgyn: See you all tomorrow!

Caleb: That was fun! I hadn't danced like that since the 1920s.

Felix: Happy birthday, my friend! Summon me more often--it was good to catch up!

L: Are you mad?...

Simeon: About which part? Over the surprise party?...Or the fact that it isn't even my birthday?

L: Details! You work too hard. Sometimes you have to slow down and enjoy life a little!

Simeon, gently: I'm not mad. I had a really good time. You are right: I should slow down a bit or I'll miss the forest for the trees. Thanks for this, L.

L: You are most welcome! And don't worry: I'll help you clean up.

Simeon, chuckling : Ha! It's the least you can do, Ms. Sage of Mischief!

It’s the night of the juice kegger. The UBrite Bunch are gathered inside to talk before the party starts.

Orchid: Alright gang, game plan time. We’re going to host the best juice kegger Britechester has ever seen, okay? What are we gonna do?

Felix, Arianna, & Rae: Mingle!

Orchid: That’s right! I invited over as many sims as we know plus the entirety of Eta Theta Epsilon, the sorority, so we have a lot of ground to cover. Don’t forget to drink and party though, this is supposed to be fun! Whatever will amuse you most, do it!

Rae: *Jokingly* Aye aye captain.

Orchid: Hey, don’t sass me, Park. We have a lot of sims to woo and a limited amount of time. The juice is filled, the music is blaring, let’s get to it!

As the guests begin to arrive, Orchid hears a screech.

Voice: Oh my MOD! Are you Orchid Posey?

Orchid turns around to see a beautiful young woman.

Voice: Hi! I’m Serenity, we went to grade school together in Newcrest!

Orchid suddenly recognizes the woman.

Orchid: Oh my mod! Hi!

The two hug and exchange greetings.

Orchid: Okay, let me change really quick and then we can catch up! Meet me by the juice keg!

Serenity: Will do!

Orchid quickly changes into her partywear and goes outside to meet Serenity. However, the old schoolmate isn’t alone. Orchid promptly grabs a drink from the top of the juice keg and greets the stranger and Serenity.

Orchid: Hello again Serenity! And…I don’t believe we’ve met?

Stranger: No I don’t think we have, I’m Kaitlyn Rubio, she/they pronouns, I’m on Rae’s e-sports team.

Orchid: Oh! Nice to meet you! I’m Orchid Posey, I use she/her pronouns, I’m one of your hosts for tonight.

Serenity: And I’m Serenity Khan, also she/her pronouns.

Kaitlyn: Nice. So, do you two know each other?

Orchid: Yeah, actually. We went to grade school together before I moved away to Sulani for high school. My dad got a job opportunity as a Conservationalist and he couldn’t pass it up. We actually came out here to catch up.

Kaitlyn: Oh, so is it a best friends separated by distance thing or a star-crossed lovers separated by distance thing?

Serenity: Hehe, I don’t know…Orchid?

Orchid: *blushes furiously* Umm I’ll have to think about it…

Kaitlyn: I think that’s my cue to head inside.

Kaitlyn leaves the two blushing girls outside.

Serenity: *ahem* So…what happened to you after you left Newcrest? We were too young to keep in good contact after your move, I only know that you were struggling with making friends and then our communication kinda fell off.

Orchid: Yeah, I’m sorry about that.

Serenity: No need to be sorry, it was only natural that the distance end our communication. So what happened?

Orchid: Well, high school was rough in the beginning. I didn’t make any friends at first as you heard, but eventually I met Rae and Arianna. I don’t remember who I met first but we all instantly became attached at the hip. They both seemed to understand me which I hadn’t felt since I had met you. It was really nice to have friends that were empathetic toward my struggles with autism and the other usual teenage struggles.

Serenity: That does sound really nice! I’m glad you had them in your life. For me, I made other friends but none of them were very close to me. That is until university, I joined a sorority and now I have four very dear friends!

Orchid: Wait, sorority? Are you a member of Eta Theta Epsilon?

Serenity: Yeah!

Orchid: So that’s how we were reunited! I invited the sorority because I heard they made parties interesting, I didn’t know you had joined!

Serenity: Well we do make parties interesting, but I didn’t know reunions were a part of that. Do you want to try a more classic way of making a party enjoyable?

Orchid: Sure! What is it?

Serenity suddenly wraps her arms around Orchids waist, hoisting her up into the air. Orchid starts giggling like crazy.

Orchid: What are you doing?! Put me down!

Serenity: HAHAHA, give me a second, let me flip you sideways, rest your hands on the keg!

Orchid places her hands on the sides of the juice keg, with Serenity moving her hands to Orchid’s legs.

Serenity: Okay, now grab the nozzle and let ‘er rip!

The two successfully perform a keg-stand. Serenity gently lets Orchid down.

Orchid: Hehehe, that was so fun! I think I need to sit down now though, I’m feeling juiced.

Serenity: Okay! Let’s head inside!

I was so excited because I thought EA purposefully made it so that ghosts showed up in their solid form in CAS with the Supernatural patch, but apparently they did it on accident and now they’re ghosts in CAS again which makes it such a pain in the butt to take pictures. I sure appreciated it when we had it though. This is Felix, the ghost of Britechester.
