☯ - Outfit They Wore When They Were 8
Odessa began emulating her father’s punky style long before the Omnium vomited its radioactive contents all over the Outback. Her parents gave her a great deal of freedom even in her earliest childhood, allowing her to attempt to give herself a wolf cut with safety scissors – and to then buzz her hair completely. Her clothes often featured (faux) leather, imitation denim, studs, spikes, slogans, patches, etc. A plus side was that many of these garments were practical and fairly durable. During their short stint in Junkertown under King Howl, and their much longer exile to the Wasteland, items of clothing had to be scavenged or traded. Dez wore a number of hand-me-downs from her father, particularly once she began to shoot up and fill out.

There's something so intrinsically wrong with this– but it's as if he's the only one who sees it, and he couldn't fathom how to elaborate as to what, fundamentally, made it so wrong.
He should be more grateful, being granted the permission to orchestrate his grief upon society en masse– just as he and SIEBREN had obsessed and fantasized for years over. Worse yet, it felt so good, malling flesh and steel as if they were paper mache, basking in the collective terror of any whom his shadow cast upon. How, exactly, did one explain the finer nuances of what was so unpleasant about this when he repeatedly allowed his self-restraint to fall victim to his own gluttonous desire for violence?
If anyone was sick here– it really was him, wasn’t it…?
Maybe that’s what makes him so unpopular with his coworkers; perhaps they thought him to possess some inflated sense of moral superiority– only to watch him turn and maul any object placed within his teeth. It seemed difficult to like someone who continuously claimed to desire their approval, yet balked at every opportunity to earn said favor. In reality, SIGMA is just as frustrated as the rest of them, at the amount of intervention required exclusively to ensure the mission concludes successfully. To anyone else, it would be no surprise– what more did TALON expect from placing someone so inexperienced in his classification? It’s humiliating that SIGMA had allowed his opponent any chance to recover whatsoever, let alone that Widowmaker had had to step in to dispatch his target for him. Again.
In reality, the trip to the cabaret had been purely of his own volition– something mundane, to try and quiet the static frequencies interrupting cohesive thought and cognitive function. In fact, SIGMA had been quite convinced that he wouldn’t see the Widowmaker there; after all, while she didn’t follow any particular routine in regards to venturing out there, there were always patterns in her behavior, if he was patient enough for them to eventually, inevitably, present themselves. Unusual of him to utilize it to avoid her, in fact, he often hyperfixated upon it to better familiarize himself to her– but he’s still bothered. Upset. Angry.
Hard to determine if the anger was self-reflective, or directed towards her– but he’s upset.
A small part of him wondered if, perhaps, she’d known he’d intended to come here; ah, but what would it matter if she had…? She hated him just as much as the rest. Perhaps she intended to deprive him of what little sense of leisurement he possessed, but she was so impassive all of the time, it seemed unlikely she cared enough to go out of her way. It’s relatively easy to select the Widowmaker from the crowd when one knew what to look for; at times, he was genuinely impressed by how easily she seemed to blend into the background despite her bizarre mannerisms and other eccentricities. Like her motif, she secludes herself off to the outer edges of the establishment, well out of the eye of inattentive patrons– however, the moment he spies her, SIGMA is quick to excuse himself from his own table. Actually, he’s so hasty to leave, he nearly forgets the prepaid card Sombra had gifted him, leaving him a little flustered as the waitron practically chases him down to return it. The evening air nips at him as the card is haphazardly tucked away into his jumpsuit’s chest pocket– however, he starts a little when the Widowmaker’s quiet, glacial tone cuts the otherwise silent air of the side alley. Ugh.
“... I do not believe in cruelty.” He retorts dryly, habitually soft lavender eyes narrowing with irritation as he slowly turns to face her. SIGMA grunts, shifting uncomfortably on his feet– shoes were so aggravating to wear with his jumpsuit. “-- And it is against my very nature to harm living things.”
“-- I do not understand; TALON only indicated a desire in my research– so why, then, am I being asked to do any of this…?”
Of course, he voices the majority of this with the maintenance of safe distance from the other agent; she was easily least likely to retaliate exclusively based upon verbal insubordination, but an inability to read her behavior left an inability to trust her behavior. Yet, despite this, he yearns to trust– both because Sombra attests to her reliability, but because he likes her just the same. That’s what makes him so irritable towards her approach, incapable of determining whether it stemmed from purely professional criticism… or some semblance of empathy, perhaps… Difficult not to feel slighted when the other agents so often failed to show even the most meager shred of empathy for him when he seemed to bleed and bleed with empathy for that which afflicts them.
“I– I-I, ah…” His words die in his throat as he scowls down at her, equal parts frustrated and equal parts saddened. “... I was hoping to get away from the rest of you for a little while– everyone only wants to talk about what I’ve done wrong…” SIGMA laments more openly now, agitation melting back into an oozing, cloying grief that settles upon the atmosphere around him. “... I do still have doubts… Wouldn’t anyone…?” He admits with a sigh, brushing wide, gloved hands against his shoulders and down his forearms, attempting to self-soothe as he begins to pace. “... No one had told me this was part of the contract… A-and failure to comply is grounds for immediate termination…! I am a scientist– why am I hurting people!?” He pauses after completing another circle on anxious feet, stopping in front of her some ways away.
“... Miss Widow, can– c-can you… keep a secret…?” SIGMA speaks up after a moment of muttering to himself, mirroring her vacant, glassy stare almost perfectly for a change. “I, ah… A-aha…. On nights like these, sometimes I– um… I… I wish I was still at the facility…” It felt like a sin, to verbally acknowledge the wretched desire to return to the fetid lair he’d been left to rot alone in. He feels sick even just saying it aloud. “If I had known what I know now, I would have never left that cell.”
But that’s all it is, isn’t it? Wishful thinking– the lot of it.
They both know that TALON had no intention of leaving him alive if he wouldn’t live his life in service; a tool was only as valuable as its use dictated– to not have a use would be the same as being utterly worthless. Oh, how he wished she cared-- could care-- if only just enough to be willing to lie to him and assure him otherwise. That's what friends were supposed to be for, weren't they? Wasn't there supposed to be comfort in commiseration...? And yet, he finds none at all.
To say he was heartbroken would be an understatement.
He’s spiraling again.
“... I will never see the COLONY again in my lifetime, will I, Miss Widow...? They lied, didn’t they…?”
"... Oh, just what have I gotten myself into...?"
five things you love about Philippa or five things you find extremely important. Go!
i. how important she is. i know, banal, but most people overlook how she is behind everything that happened in ciri's story and whatnot. people don't understand how much her scheming and playing the long game shaped the events of the books, especially since she doesn't really appear much and half of those time it's only said she's sleeping with a woman (queen). one of the most significant events that she is involved in is the thanned coup, which sets in motion the events that lead to ciri's journey. the thanned coup is a political upheaval that in the end will lead to a reign marked by brutality and persecution of non-humans, which leads to war and chaos. despite the fact that she did not intend for ciri to become embroiled in these events, she quickly realizes that ciri's unique abilities and lineage make her a valuable asset. philippa's manipulation of ciri is a testament to her charisma and cunning. furthermore, her influence extends far beyond the thanned coup and ciri's journey. she is a key player in the political landscape of the witcher universe, and her actions have far-reaching consequences. philippa's abrasive personality and willingness to use others for her own gain make her a controversial figure, but there is no denying the impact that she has on the witcher universe. her scheming and manipulation are a major driving force behind the events that transpire throughout the series, and her influence is felt long after her own story arc comes to an end.
ii. how ruthless she is: she is a confident woman that knows what she wants, and she is not above being merciless or using extreme methods to reach her goal (e.g. regicide -> this act not only demonstrates her willingness to use violence to achieve her goals but also highlights her lack of concern for the lives of others. philippa was willing to sacrifice the life of a king in order to further her own agenda, and this is a testament to her cold and calculating nature.). at the same time, she is not devoid of compassion, she can be merciful, and has shown a somewhat motherly care (read: her change of heart and her vote in the end saved ciri and sealed her fate free from what was previously in store for her) -> this is a big step for her, especially considering how she was presented to us at first. it demonstrate that she is capable of making selfless decisions for the greater good. furthermore, there are steps she won't take, she's not completely unhinged as there are certain lines that philippa will not cross. for example, she is vehemently opposed to necromancy and considers it to be a vile and abhorrent practice. this stance is particularly notable given her overall willingness to use extreme methods to achieve her goals. it demonstrates that even someone as ruthless as philippa has a sense of morality and a code of conduct that she adheres to.
iii. she's extremely patriotic, with a strong sense of nationalism. she's fully in for the northern realms, a staunch supporter, and she will rather die than let herself be subjugated from nilfgaard; she believes that the northern realms should be united against their enemies, which she sees as a threat to their independence and way of life. she is willing to do whatever it takes to protect the northern realms, even if it means making difficult and unpopular decisions. (e.g. her involvement in the thanned coup was partly motivated by her desire to install a ruler who would be more favorable to the northern realms and better able to defend them against nilfgaard.)(read: we don't want that allying with nilfgaard bullshit in this house, eventually i'll write about it more in details but i think her allying with nilfgaard at the end is such bullshit and the only way i could effectively see her being there is if ciri is empress and even then that would make no sense because come on, it's philippa we're talking about).
iv. she's fiercly loyal to the cause, she will die for the cause -> she is deeply committed to the cause of magic and to the northern realms, and she is willing to make any sacrifice necessary to further those goals. this loyalty is evident in her decision not to renounce her faith in magic, even on the brink of death. she knows that renouncing magic could save her life, but she refuses to do so, as it would mean compromising her beliefs and her loyalty to the cause. she does not wish to be saved, as taking the ultimate sacrifice will consacrate her as a martyr for eternity, and she does not wish to live if she cannot be herself. she does not wish to live in a world where she cannot retain her independence, as she is not afraid to go against the norms of society or the expectations of others. furthermore, she's not only fiercly loyal to the cause, she is fiercly loyal towards anyone she considers her ally, or even friend, as tentative as it may be.
v. how ambiguous she is, how she can give you whiplash from one page to the other. reading her parts was a delight, because she is not predictable, she's always playing the long game, and she's always one step above the reader. her unpredictability and complexity make her a fascinating character to read about, and her storylines are often some of the most engaging to me. furthermore, one of the most striking aspects of philippa's character is her inconsistency. she can go from being ruthless and calculating to being docile and understanding in a matter of seconds, and this can be disorienting and this is what makes it worth it to read her parts. she is not above using manipulation and deceit to achieve her goals, and this can make it difficult to determine her true motivations. she is skilled at playing both sides of the game, and it can be challenging to discern which side she is truly on. this ambiguity adds an element of tension and intrigue to her storylines, as we are constantly left wondering what her true intentions are.

❝ I LIKE YA PERFUME . what is that ? the stench of death ? ❞ was she joking ? flirting ? or bein' rude ? who could tell and who the hell truly cared ? death by her hands or death in her veins . either way it clung to this deadly belle like a proper woman clung to her pearls .
ONCE /// he had been asked what he thought was capable of ending society. ATOM BOMBS had been his answer, & he had been bored to give it. but the sentiment . . . the sentiment still sits in his stomach with grating truth that does not weigh upon him. atom bombs, weapons : the result of competitive heat between two forces who claim a cause that serves to mask aching hunger for power.
weapons. guns certainly aren’t atom bombs - but they are a ladder rung on the climb to grander destruction. TO HIM — it smells of desperation. he had once tasted bloody death on his tongue when he held a gun . . . & now ? guns seem like a weak weapon.
although . . . he can respect can respect can respect the precision required of marksmanship. SO HE EYES THIS NEW ADDITION TO THE UPRISING & tries to find a judgement. it evades him . . . so mismatched eyes roll as he breathes in to gage her scent.
that it’s fine is all he can say. maybe there’s a hint of something artificial he can’t place . . . but she’s fine. it does not make him trust her. the edge of his teeth dig into his cheek with passing thought —- & then he smiles; the grip of his jaw is so clearly tight.
