We talk about equality and acceptance as if it already existed-but in all honesty, it teeters. We view people as a system of extreme beliefs and not people- because that’s how most of us were brought into this world. Stereotype after stereotype. “You’re a Republican AND a Christian?! You must hate gays and feel the need to force your beliefs on everyone and you’re a racist and a bigot!” Or “Oh! You’re a Democrat and an Atheist?! You must be a huge druggie and hipster and a completely arrogant know-it-all who has a chip on your shoulder.” Or “Oh! You’re a female? You must be over emotional and sensitive and extremely feministic to the point where it’s over dramatic and hate all men.” Or “Oh! You’re a man? You must rape and murder all the time! I just know you’re sexist and bigoted yet you’ve got life good.” And the list goes on. But do you ever stop to think that not everyone who associates themselves with a “group” is an “extreme”? Why do we focus on the bad? Christian and Republican? I for one, support LGBTQ and stand for feminism. Not a Christian? I don’t care- you do what makes you feel like a bad bitch. A total cunt? Well then, yeah, you can go fuck yourself. I’m also female and you wanna know something? Yeah, I am kind of emotional and maybe a bit sensitive when I’ve hit a low but that’s EVERYONE. I bet you Dolph Lundgren still has his moments of insecurity. But you know what I’m not? A “stereotypical female” (there’s no such thing). A hater of men. So we might be emotional-some of us, not at all. Some of us might be sensitive- not all of us though. Some might even dislike males. But maybe there’s a reason for all of that. Maybe instead of forming your own opinions and judgments immediately after processing the words, you ask them why? Maybe instead of viewing that person as a uniform block belonging to a mass, you view them as an individual with their own takes on their religion or political stance or sexual orientation etc. And if equality’s so important, why treat them so different if their beliefs aren’t necessarily yours? (Unless they’re a negative entity; don’t associate yourself with nasties, they’ll ruin you.) I mean, aren’t we all just looking for the same thing in life? Love. Acceptance.
