Poe, Rey, & Finn: What They Like to Do in Their Downtime

Poe Dameron:

Poe doesn’t get much downtime, and when he does, it’s usually never really described as “downtime.” He’s usually fixing something on his X-Wing, helping with tactics, or helping to plan missions for others within the Resistance. It’s rare when he can be seen doing something for himself rather than for the Resistance, and in those rare cases, it’s usually when he’s spending time with his team in the Black Squadron. He’s been through hell and back with them, and it’s always a relief to sit back and relax, have a few drinks, and swap stories with one another. Some would probably say it’s just to keep his team in good spirits, but everyone knows - he does it because he cares, and he enjoys their company; it’s as simple as that.

Rey:

When Rey was living on Jakku and scavenging everyday so she could survive, she found herself with a lot of downtime, time she used to let her imagination soar and dream for a day when she could leave the planet and make something of herself. Now, however, her downtime is scarce - she’s a Jedi, and that makes her a target, so she keeps one eye open at all times, usually always on alert. The only time she truly relaxes is when she’s around those she cares about - Finn, BB-8, Chewie, Poe, General Organa - they make her feel safe, and she knows she can trust them. When she’s not training or planning missions, she can usually be found with one of them, just talking and getting to know them better. If she isn’t with them, she can usually be found by herself in a secluded area. Depending on where she is, she’ll spend most of her free time enjoying nature - she adores greenery, and even has a plant on the Falcon that she tends to herself. It’s a part of her that she gets to discover, and it’s a way to help clear her mind of her troubles, if only for a moment.

Finn:

Back in the First Order, downtime usually meant you weren’t doing your job, and that was never a good thing. So, Finn isn’t really used to having nothing to do, especially when he’s with the Resistance. When he’s faced with this dilemma, he starts to spend his spare time learning how the Resistance works, how they come to form their strategies, and how they manage to save so many with such a small force. When he isn’t doing that, he’s spending time learning the correct history of the galaxy. In the First Order, history is always distorted and kept hush-hush, except when it’s a win for the First Order, then it’s the right history. There’s a lot that Finn wasn’t taught or privileged enough to know, so he’s eager to learn everything he can, and it also keeps him busy and feel like he’s helping; in other words, knowing more makes him feel like he isn’t just someone who defected from the First Order.
