I’m trying not to cry again as I type this but I’m beyond happy and relieved. I’ve always voted in every election since I turned 18, and I knew in 2016 that it would be bad, but the years that followed were horrific. I’ve lost people I once called friends because I’ve grown as a person. Because loving yourself means ending relationships with toxic people who would deny you the same rights they freely enjoy. Because having values, compassion, and decency means that when you’re white, you stand up for your brothers, sisters, and folx of color. I’m so tired of waking up surrounded by people who think of me and the people I care about as lesser or other. It’s hard to express how painful that burden is until you’ve felt it, and today, my load is a little lifted.

I hate to use the word blessed, but I feel so truly grateful to live and work where I do. This year I was able to participate in our voting rights project, where we helped 22 clients who were involuntarily hospitalized inquire about their voter status and we helped 10 clients vote in the election. President-Elect Biden wasn’t my first, second, or even third choice, but I will support him and Vice President-Elect Harris, and I will continue to fight to push progressive policies and platforms.
