Bats at the Library!
Not real bats, of course! Miss Marcia from Main came by to talk about bat awareness in Florida. Did you know that there are over 1200 different species of bats? Or that they existed 65 million years ago? We learned lots of fun facts about bats. Miss Marcia showed us really neat videos she took of bats leaving their special house in Gainesville, and even one of a baby being fed. She also lead us in an exercise to see how fast and how much bats flap their wings.
Afterward, we did several bat-related crafts that Miss Marcia brought with her from Main! There were bat rings, thumbprint bats, and bats made out of our hands.

What is suspected to be the world's largest bat house - housing over 100,000 bats - is right here in Gainesville Florida. With easy street access and even some shady benches to await nightfall and bat rise.
Yes. And that IS a redtailed hawk which snatched one of the little bats right out of the sky as an end of day meal. Happy hawk - but we were sad for the bat.
