February 21, 2026 - White-sided Flowerpiercer (Diglossa albilatera) These flowerpiercers are found in forest clearings and edges, stunted forests, and cultivated areas along the Andes mountains from Venezuela to central Peru. Foraging alone, in pairs, or in family groups, they feed on nectar and probably insects, using their hooked bills to pierce the bases of flowers. They build open cup-shaped nests from moss and other plant materials.

In the National Park Tatamá, after hiking for hours since 4am, shrouded in mist the whole way up, we arrived at the peak. And one of our first sights was this glorious bird: Diglossa gloriossisima, the Chestnut-Bellied Flowerpiercer! A vulnerable, endemic species we were hoping to find, and it ended up finding us first! It was such a magical encounter!

Starting a new personal art month challenge, decembirb (at least that's what we're calling it for now). Essentially, we struggle with prompt lists so we're letting eBird's random species search give us a bird to draw each day. Here's day 1-3!

Photo of the Day - The Golden-eyed Flowerpiercer (Diglossa glauca) is also commonly referred to as Deep-blue Flowerpiercer. From its appearance, both seem entirely appropriate. This is the only flowerpiercer that has a yellow eye. This combined with its wholly blue plumage make it almost instantly identifiable.
