GISHWHES - FOGRAT (2012)
Part rat, part...uh, some kind of bird, this was the very first GISHWHES mascot!

For Gishers, By Gishers! Gishwhes items with our beloved mascots! All profits go to Random Acts.
I created some GISHWHES friendly stickers, fridge magnets & pinback buttons, including our historical Hybrid Mascots, kale, a sock monkey, a honeybee, rainbows & unicorns galore! I started with the intent to get some previous mascot love into the hands of seasoned gishers, but now I am simply in love with all the gishwhes things! So, go check it out! All proceeds will be donated directly to Random Acts!
@officialgishwhes @mishacollins Is there anything better than Gishwhes cookies? I don’t think there is.
Check out Team Werepires of London-- you could be a part of this abnosomeness!!
We're in the @officialgishwhes off season right now, but we here at Team Scrumtrulescent are still in a Gishy mood! Here's what @melefim, our resident seamstress, has been spending her free time on- check it out!
As soon as I saw the fantastic Merry Gishwhes T-Shirt design by @brucelovesyou (I think? If not, please let me know so I can credit properly!) in the Schwag Schwop, I knew I'd have to try and replicate it- and it's finally finished!
Since I'm the 'go big or go home' type, I decided that instead of cross stitch, this would be an excellent time to give crochet colorwork a shot- a big step up, considering the most complex color changes I'd done before this was sock monkey hats!
Once my Schwag arrived, I redrew the shirt design into a workable (20 page!) grid pattern and got to work. I started crocheting on Christmas Eve, and set a goal of finishing at least one row every day. 53 days later, I tied off the final stitch on Valentine's day. The entire thing is exactly 26,500 stitches (how weird is that?) and measures 36 inches tall by 26 inches wide.
The yarn I used and the design itself sadly made it too large for me to make it into an actual sweater, so now I have instead a nice gishy tapestry, or a cape if the mood strikes me. A Capestry. Yes. I like that.
Anywho, I kept the pattern as close to the original design as possible, though I did change some things- I squared the design by extending/shortening the borders between the different mascots so they were the same length, continued the 'snowflake' dots over the entire Elopus section, and added a border around the entire thing.
The only mascot I changed anything on was the Elopus. As I was stitching the Fograt and Wooster, I noticed there was a slant to the stitches, which, combined with the stitch shape, was misshaping parts of the design, particularly in the thin and angled sections (like the Wooster tail). Because of this, I ended up adding stitches to the tentacles to prevent them becoming fractured on the final design, while still trying to keep the shape of the design and original logo. It's not quite perfect, but I'm happy with it.
For those interested in that kind of thing, I used a size F-5 (3.75mm) hook and 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn. The green and white were less than one (170 yard) skein each. The black yarn took two skeins of the same yardage. For the red, I got two larger skeins- 426 yards each- and used just about all of them (the equivalent of 5 of the smaller ones).
So, that’s that! On to the next project!
So, there you have it! The first ever (at least we think so) Merry Gishwhes Capestry!
Thanks for stopping by! And while you're here, feel free to take a peek at our past items or shoot us an ask! And hey, if you're looking for a fun, competitive team to Gish with this year, there's a spot for that, too! We'd love to hear from you!
