The real reason why Ash acted so oblivious to Serena is because he's a huge fondant shipper (Serena x miette)

the serenamiette rivalry was never about ash but he was definitely supposed to contrast them both in his true confidence vs miette's false one and his drive and passion vs serena's aimlessness. They use him as a vessel to talk abt their own insecurities that are made worse when theyre threatened by each other. Which is so funny to me... there has never been anyone on the planet as bad at communicating as these two. Half of the conversations they have about ash are heavily layered to the point where you gotta ask "is this even about ash anymore" AND THEY NEVER ARE

I’ve broken down Calem across this blog in many ways especially through Kalosshipping means but I’ve had many run ins with Serena (and her counterparts) when it comes to other pairings…and all of them share something

• Fondantshipping

The least glaring of the trio I will present, Serena’s jealousy is simple, that’s what makes it good.

Miette is naturally snarky which clashes with Serena; Serena is trying to build confidence in her craft, her mother’s low hopes ringing like tinnitus. She needs to prove herself which puts her on defense immediately.

Miette for one reason or another (wish we had more time to get into her head) loves that attention. The boost of intimidating someone with your abilities.

She digs her heels in.

The dance in party dancecapades stands as pure evidence Miette holds no true feelings towards Ash, just a want to rile her competition. They have nothing in way of tension and bounce off each other in the worst way for a dance date.

This relationship is built on bickering, teasing, arguing, but most importantly respect. Miette watches her grow into a confident young lady who leaves her furrowed brow behind for proper sportsmanship. Romantically i wonder if they’d ever have a chance of being anything serious behind the wall of jeering that separates them. Their master class battle gave them ripe potential with Miette finally showing her weak spot.

• Yvette/Yvonne in pokespe (I don’t believe they have a ship name)

The most popular girl in school wants your head on a stick and you nearly kill each other in a hand to hand sky battle while she accidentally solves some of your mommy issues, most would call that yuri you know…

Yvette is hateful, nasty, cruel even. But it’s furthered by jealousy not towards Yvonne herself but rather the status of Yvonne’s mom. Yvette makes Yvonne’s life at school hell because Yvonne is taking a spotlight Yvette refuses to let go of.

Yvette was an easy target for team flare to use against the Vaniville kids, she already had her motive.

A little bit of mind control to heighten the tension (violence) and you have a girl attacking a helicopter and taunting their bullied victim in morse code to come out and get serious.

And the best part is that Yvonne leans into it so heavily. She’s not on defense like Serena in fondantshipping, she’s on offense. Always has been.

And after they fall from the fight Yvonne has every right to leave Yvette for dead, she’s done nothing for her but make her miserable, she’s beaten and out cold. But still Yvonne leaves the unconscious Yvette in an area where she knows she’ll be found soon and ensures shes given help.

They are members of the same craft, it’s implied their friendship begins in the end. They respect each other somewhere in there. Respect the other enough to give them a fight, respect to not leave them a corpse.

I’ve said a lot of things about them you can check the tag I never shut up.

These two fall apart throughout the game mostly out of his own false ego but they start heavy handed. Calem assuming she knows nothing and easily coming off as almost condescending when teaching her the basics for players who are already well aware of how to play pokemon.

But he is humbled rather swiftly by him failing to win a single fight against her, only being semi useful as a teammate and even then his head isn’t in the game, they have two different mindsets in battle shown to us in their pokemas bios

Serena stone faces calm in battle much unlike her normal teeth rotting sweet appeal, Calem however ramps up. This leaves their rivalry at an imbalance as they almost swap entirely.

Player opinion of Calem was easy to see with his blunt short and avoidant behavior, Calem is a dick. But he’s an insecure dick. In fact his insecurities make him a dick, he’s born to battle trainers this is his legacy and he’s getting clobbered by a beginner when he’s implied to be rigorously trained.

And Serena has every right to distance herself from him as he does from her in his own steeping shame, but courtesy of pokemon masters we know she doesn’t. She sticks to him, they talk often, they’re close as close can be…and Calem’s opinion of her is damn near worshipping in leaders of a new era.

Concluding thoughts.

This is obviously not a full data pools it’s three ships that follow a pattern in a sea of infinite pairs, but If I’ve gravitated towards all of these then that says something about my own perspective of the girl in question. How I write her.

Stubborn and argumentative people, rivals and enemies, is it a need to fix them or a moral want to smooth their rough edges without changing their shapes?

Any affection given even in the most platonic means would feel like peak intimacy, these people so far from open or touchy. The tiniest push easily romanticized due to its rarity.

What is it that drives all three forms of the same girl to prick her finger on that needle.

A hopeless romantic subconsciously seeking something exclusive from a hard to find source. A mended heart of her own making. a reverse garden of Eden.

A spark in her heart to help everyone, in any situation, in any context. Even her love life.
