I'm going to give the TLDR now: Confused 😂
I don't have my variant of Dreamtale down quite yet but I can give a generalized idea.
Before 'The Incident ' their naive asses would mostly be curious and want to learn about your boys. Also, it depends how threatening they come across (I mean, your Nightmare can be pretty intimidating). So to summarize, confused but curious.
After 'The Incident ' they would be on guard and alarmed. Immediately on the defensive (Dream would always be positioned in front of Nightmare, to Nightmares annoyance but it's not a fight worth getting into).
After all, no one should be able to get through the forest to where they live. How did these guys get there and why do they 'feel' (for lack of a better word) familiar?
After being introduced to the multiverse (by Ink), they would still be on guard but not as confused. Even though their mother no longer has the apples they still don't want anything to happen to her (or each other) , so they would tread with caution.
Their behavior could change depending on how your Dream and Nightmare present themselves.
I'm opening 3 slots for commissions. Preferred just one character but if you want something more we can negotiate prices. I prefer Undertale related (and AU's) but I'm open to other fandoms and OC's.

I imagine forcing an emotion with your paints is very unhealthy for someone with a soul. He probably figured that out very quickly and didn’t want to hurt your feelings. Because paint inspired or not they are your feelings.
