From • @realhistoryuncovered In 1848, 14-year-old Maggie Fox and her 11-year-old sister Kate masterminded an elaborate prank in their home in Hydesville, New York. They learned that if they cracked their toe joints against a wooden floor or chair in just the right way, they could create loud "rapping" sounds. They told their mother they could communicate with spirits, and they demonstrated this by asking questions like, "How old are you?" and "If you're an angry spirit, will you rap three times?" and then cracking their toes the appropriate number of times. Unfortunately for the girls, their mother believed them — and invited friends and neighbors over to witness this for themselves. Convinced they would get in trouble for lying, the Fox sisters were afraid to confess that it had all been a joke. They confided in their eldest sister, Leah, who saw the business potential in their act. Soon, the three sisters were traveling the country, holding seances and "communicating" with the spirits of historical figures like Benjamin Franklin. The ruse continued for 40 years and even helped bring about the rise of the Spiritualism movement in the United States. Finally, in 1888, Maggie admitted the truth — but Spiritualism was so widespread by then that many didn't believe her.
