“Happy Birthday y/n!” the group cheered.
Naomi and Emily shove a gift bag to your chest, decorative multi-colored tissue paper spilling out of it.
“Aw thanks!” you beam, already sticking your hand in the bag, eager to see what your friends got you.
You pull out a heavily decorated keepsake box that’s signed by all of your mates. Running your hands over it, you admire all of the doodles and scribbles in various colors. No one has ever taken the time to make you something so special for your birthday before.
“Hurry and open it!” Pandora chirps, bouncing around you with her sweet eyes trained on the box in your hands.
You take a breath and pull the lid off of the box.
“Surprise!” everyone yells.
You smile brightly as you lift up a decorated rolling tray and packs of rolling papers with stickers on them. You peer inside the box to see a small wrapped bag of weed, most likely from Thomas, in the corner of the box and various other goodies and trinkets.
“Aw thanks, you guys!” you giggle.
Panda excitedly explains the gift, “We remembered you told us you wish you had one for your room, so we made you one!”
You tell her thanks and admire your new favorite gift. Naomi, Emily, Katie, Cook, JJ, Freddie, Effy, Pandora, Thomas, and even Karen signed and decorated the tray, now forever encapsulated behind poorly poured resin. You will cherish the imperfectly perfect gift without a second thought.
“Open the card!” Katie says.
Taking out the rest of the tissue paper from the box, you uncover the colorful birthday card hidden at the bottom. You swiftly open it and confetti falls out and onto your lap. Ignoring the mess for now, you read through the card. All of your mates writing a sweet or silly message to wish you a happy birthday makes you tear up a bit.
“Cheers y/n!” Cook shouts, patting you roughly on the back.
Effy passes you a spliff she saved specifically for you, “Had to hide this from Panda.” she smirks.
After you thank Effy and light the spliff that was now in between your lips, you look around the table at all of your friends, noticing that Freddie is nowhere to be seen around the shitty pub you were all at.
Where is he? you thought to yourself.
Just as you were going to get up and find him, Freddie appears from behind the pub counter, covered in flecks of frosting and sprinkles.
“Oi, y/n, I made you a cake. Sorry it looks like proper shit, it was harder than I thought it would be to decorate.” Freddie carefully places the very homemade looking cake in front of you, sweat beading at his brow, “Happy Birthday, y/n.” he says, placing the cleaner hand of the two on your shoulder.
You look up and meet his eyes, heart skipping a beat at both the contact and his thoughtfulness.
“Thanks Freds, you’re so sweet.” you say timidly, face becoming hot as blood rushes to your cheeks.
Freddie looks down at you with a flicker in his eyes you have never seen before. It was… too soft… too loving of a look to be had between best mates. A soft, closed lipped smile plasters across his face as he gives you a playful pinch on the cheek.
“Oi, lovebirds! Are we gonna eat that cake or what?” Cook jests. Naomi rolls her eyes and mumbles something under her breath. Emily snickers. Your face grows even hotter as you laugh off the implication.
“Yeah, yeah. Let’s get to the cake, shall we?” Freddie flashes another smile at you, then takes a pack of candles out of his pockets and rips them open. With more care than needed, he places the cheap candles on the cake one by one. JJ passes Freddie a box of matches so he can light them.
The group sings you happy birthday and you close your eyes tight before the song ends. A beat after the last obnoxiously drawn out note, you carefully blow out your candles and everyone cheers.
I hope he becomes mine…
You eye the cake as you remove the candles, “I bet this is going to taste amazing!”
Before you take out the last of the melted wax, Freddie smears a dollop of icing on the tip of your nose. “Freds!” you shout, half laughing and immediately working to wipe off the sugary mess. Effy and Pandora give you two smiley, knowing looks, but the both of you don’t notice.
Freddie laughs as you lightly punch him on the arm. He is sitting next to you now, his axe body spray cutting through the melded scent of sugar, beer, pizza, and smoke. He places his hand on your knee and rubs his thumb on your thigh. Without a second thought, you intertwine your fingers on top of his and give his hand a brief squeeze before letting go.
You turn your focus to everyone else at the table, cutting slices of the cake and passing them out. Everyone is happy and borderline drunk and or faded at this point, and things are great. You loved when all of your friends were all together and getting along. This is probably the best birthday you’ve ever had, and you couldn’t be more grateful for it.

You and Freddie are the last ones at the pub cleaning up the mess from the birthday party.
“You don’t have to stay y’know, I think I can manage the rest of it.” you tell Freddie, wiping down the table and picking up the last of the confetti that littered the chairs and floor. “Don’t you want to go meet the others in the underground?”
“We can catch up with them later, they’ll be there all night. I don’t mind helping you.” Freddie answers, stuffing the paper plates into a garbage bag. “Plus, I have something else I wanted to give you before we left for the party.” he admits, eyes down and face flushed.
You turn to look at Freddie, searching his body language for a hint, anything that would point to what he meant by that. “Something else?”
“Yeah. I got you something special.”
“Well… What is it?” your curiosity is peaked, but you know Freddie won't tell you.
Freddie laughs, “Wait until we are done cleaning this mess and I will walk you to the shed, alright?”
You go back to cleaning up the remnants of the celebration, unable to hide your smile — mind racing with what Freddie could possibly have in store for you.

“So, did you enjoy your birthday?” Freddie asks, putting his arm around your shoulders to shield you from the nightly breeze. His tall, lean build radiates a heat that comforts you down to the bone.
“Yeah, it was proper. I had a lot of fun, and the cake was amazing, Freds.” You look up at him, smiling, wrapping your arms around him like a koala. You two haven’t been this close before, but something about tonight just feels right.
Freddie hugs you tighter, “Good, I’m glad.”
You both make your way to his shed in a comfortable silence the rest of the walk, enjoying the new level of closeness you have been sharing the whole day.

“Okay, close your eyes.” Freddie says as he makes his way behind the patterned couch you’re sitting on, careful not to trip over the various items that litter the shed floor.
You wait for what feels like forever before you feel Freddie sink down on the couch beside you – he is very close. His knees brush yours as he prepares himself to give you your gift. His smell is intoxicating, making you shift in your seat.
“Okayyyy… open!”
You open your eyes and spot a small box with a ribbon tied onto it in Freddie's hands. You don’t say anything yet, undoing the perfect bow on the top and slowly opening the flat lid of the box. You pull out a beautiful heart-shaped locket necklace with delicate engraving on the front.
You choke back tears, “Freddie! This is gorgeous! I love it so much.”
“I knew you’d like it.”
Freddie takes the locket from you as you turn your back to him so he can put the necklace on you. His fingertips brush the nape of your neck after the necklace is set on you, and a beat later you feel Freddie’s lips ghost that same area, culminating the movement into an open-mouthed kiss.
You break.
You turn around, planting your hands on Freddie’s broad shoulders and kiss him feverishly. He returns your passion and the two of you fall back onto the couch, hands exploring each other’s bodies like you are both afraid of this moment ending too soon.
A minute or two later, you break for air. Freddie kisses you on the forehead as you rest on top of him. “This has been the best birthday, Freds.” you say quietly, tracing his chest with your finger.
He runs his fingers through your hair, “Yeah? Think I can make it even better?” He laughs like he knows that what he just said is going to ruin the best friend status you two have had for the last year and a half.
You think for a split second before a smug smile appears on your face. You pin Freddie down swiftly, planting a kiss on his lips, “Yeah, I think you can… So show me.”
Freddie smiles and pulls you close, eager to show you what he has been waiting to do for ages.
