Friday Field Notes - 10 July 2026

You ever just drop your phone while taking iNaturalist photos?

Baby Pronghorn and Milkweed season.

Made Milkweed flower cordial and didin't die. Tastes like funky watermelon.

And Happy Wildfire season! Also, my birthday's this weekend, so kick up your feet and have a treat.

12 June 2026 - Friday Field Notes

From the past couple of weeks, in no particular order...

From the mountains to the plains.

Pronghorn - Antilocapra americana - It's fawn season and I've yet to see one.

Prairie Rattlesnake - Crotalus viridis - I've seen 12 rattlesnakes so far this season though.

Bullsnake - Pituophis catenifer - Haven't seen as many Bullsnakes, but there's a big one that's been hanging out around the garden.

Prairie Dog skull - Cynomys ludovicianus || Desert Cottontail - Sylvilagus audobonii

Raccoon - Procyon lotor - a shy lad

Behold all the flowers!

Flexible Milkvetch - Astragalus flexuosus - This was a new one for me.

Shell-leaved Penstemon - Penstemon grandiflorus (foreground) || Rocky Mountain Penstemon - Penstemon strictus (background)

Bee Balm - Monarda fistulosa - This one is probably my favorite of the month right now. Smells great and you can make a really nice tea out of it.

Blue Flax - Linuum lewisii

Blanketflower - Gaillardia aristata

Rocky Mountain Columbine - Aquilegia coerulea? - This guy is supposed to be blue, but somehow it's pink? Nursery may have given me a different species on accident or this one hybridized.

Hairy-footed Scoliid Wasp - Dielis pilipes on Showy Milkweed - Asclepias speciosa - Thought this was a bee at first, but she was freaking giant, not fuzzy, and had an itty-bitty waist.

This flowerbed is popping off.

If all goes according to plan, this will be a patch of Buffalograss and Blue Grama Grass in a couple of weeks.
