The Dead Frog Saga
So. Strange things have been happening at my job so I thought I'd do a little story time.
A month or two into my job as a waitress at a retirement home, I was delivering room service meals when I noticed something weird on the windowsill at the end of the hall. It was a small frog, long dead, all shriveled and mummified. I didn't want to touch it or anything so I didn't move it and left thinking it was a weird one-time thing.
Well, nobody else moved it either, for quite some time. I supposed nobody else knew it was there, that would explain the near petrified-state it was in. And so there it remained.
I noticed the second one a week or two after that. This one was even smaller, tiny, maybe the size of my fingernail. This one sat on a small decorative shelf in the hallway outside a resident's apartment. This hallway is indoors, this is important to note. We'll call this resident Mrs. Daniels. The frog was nearly hidden by the small ceramic cardinal statue the shelf held up. This, I thought, was surely a coincidence.
A few weeks later the hallways were being repainted, and so all the residents had to move their hallway decorations off of the walls. Both dead frogs disappeared then, as expected, and I thought I would never see another one.
Once the paint dried, all the decorations went back up, and that little decorative shelf did too, frog-free. I stopped looking for them then.
A few weeks later I was delivering room service to Mrs. Daniels and it. was. back. The tiny dead frog was back on the shelf. After it hadn't been there for weeks. It seemed to be the same one too, its stiff little limbs rigor-mortised in the same position. This was when I began to tell my friends. This new incident implied intent.
Every time I pass Mrs. Daniel's apartment I check the shelf. I've checked the hallway windowsill too, the bigger frog has not made a return. But that's not important right now, what is important is that every few weeks a new tiny dead frog will join the previous one. As of today, when I checked the shelf as I did my room service rounds, there were four little shriveled dead frogs on the shelf. None of the others seem to have moved in the slightest. There's just a new one every now and then.
What's going on? Is Mrs. Daniels a witch? Or did she cross one? Is there some kind of purpose to keeping dead frogs on your shelves? What was the deal with the big frog? Is there a frog invasion about to be launched? What is going on?
