Unpopular opinion here but Megara from Hercules is Disney’s worst excuse for a feminist character. Even Snow White and Cinderella stay cheerful throughout everything, Ariel literally saves her prince’s life, Aurora can’t help that her story requires her to sleep the whole time. Now Meg, when we first meet her, insists she can handle herself. She totally can’t and still needs Hercules to rescue her. Which can be excused because obviously The Hero needs to save someone, and it’s a giant monster that no single human can fight, but she just comes across as overly cocky while also doing nothing to back that up. To quote Unshaved Mouse, “It just feels like Disney is waving their hands shouting ‘Look! A princess who doesn’t need to be rescued!’ And they already did that (with Esmeralda from Hunchback) And it was awesome.” Which, I agree. Esmeralda could absolutely handle herself. And she didn’t make a point of it either. And she didn’t say everything was fine when it wasn’t and end up looking like a fool. Meg never gets her chance to prove her apparent action girl tendencies either. Every fight is taken up by Hercules. Meg also literally dies at one point and needs him to save her. And here’s the clincher. Her whole personality of “I don’t need a man to save me?” It’s from her trauma from her horrible boyfriend. Now there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s valid, but her story in particular seems to imply that every time a woman says she doesn’t need a man, it’s because she had some horrible relationship before. And she still gets a man in the end who makes everything better. It has the same energy of “every asexual person has trauma and needs to be fixed.”
