after months of letters mike and el exchange while she’s in lenora, mike starts to notice the difference in their signature words—“love, el” vs. “from mike”.

the more time passes, the more mike realizes the implications of it and questions arise. why can’t he write the word “love” to his girlfriend? it’s just four letters, it shouldn’t be so difficult. after all, he loves her (he thin—i mean, he knows it). of course he does.

so he decides to practice. one afternoon, he stares at his reflection in the mirror, resolution burning in his eyes—he’s gonna proclaim his love, say it over and over again until he gets accostumed to it. until it becomes normal, ordinary, and it doesn’t feel that scary anymore. it’s just a few words, he can do it.

he looks himself in the mirror, takes a deep breath, and sheepishly stutters the words “i love you”. once, twice, thrice, but soon terror paints his face, because everytime he says it, clearer than the one before the face that pops up in his mind isn’t el’s—“shit. shit. shitshitshit”—it’s will’s.
