sorry for another question but did wilbur or tommy ever win at martinsville? and if so what did they do with the big grandfather clock lol

OOOHH that’s such a fun question!

I think if Wilbur won he would keep the clock at his apartment. Tommy would definitely find some way to tease him about it—probably saying it’s too “old-school” and no one but his grandparents and antique shops use those anymore (not true but he’s being difficult on purpose😂). But he’s 100% in love with it and Wilbur can tell.

If Tommy wins, he gifts it to his parents. Whenever people ask what the thought process was behind that he downplays it by saying he’s traveling all the time and can’t keep a giant clock inside a motorhome, but he actually gave it to them as a thank you for always supporting him—especially when he was with his old chief. He hardly ever got to see them back then and their relationship got kinda strained, and even though they don’t blame him at all, he still feels guilty about it. So it’s a “sorry, also I love you, also I promise we’ll spend more time together now” present. 🥹

When Wilbur first discovers Tommy Innes, he’s got his arse halfway on his suitcase, head between his knees, and is desperately tugging at a zipper that just will not budge. “Jesus Prime, mother of NASCAR,” he grumbles, then jumps up and down as best he can, trying to shove the top half of the suitcase down to meet the bottom. “Tommy,” his chief starts as he stops to lean against the side of the tunnel, and for a second, Tommy wonders if maybe he’s actually read this all wrong, and he’s about to be praised. He’d done good, hadn’t he? He’d come third, which isn’t first, but it’s so close. It’s top three! He sat still in his interviews. He hadn’t rambled. He’d been everything his chief wanted him to be. “Tommy, I am so disappointed in you.” Paint, black like oil, begins dripping over his head like the rain outside.

@liteh0me i made this into an actual post bc unfortunately im a yapper and couldn’t stop once the ball got rolling😭 but here’s the answer:

I didn’t know all the details about ft!tommy’s parents, but I knew they always supported his career. When ft!tommy left to meet his new chief for the first time (the “ex-chief” from Full Throttle), he was sooo excited to be starting a new chapter and getting closer to his Cup Series goal. So when he called his parents for the first time to say he couldn’t make it home for whatever visit they’d had planned, they were naturally a little disappointed, but also— this is their kid achieving his dreams!!!! They can see each other another time!

Except that time kept getting pushed back…and back…and at some point their weekly video calls stopped happening…and then phone calls kept being postponed…and….

You get the point.

Basically ft!tommy’s chief was doing his absolute best to convince Tommy anything outside of racing was a distraction. He wanted him cut him off from anyone who might interfere. So while Tommy technically COULD still call his parents, by that point he’d been conditioned into a place where he was afraid to. (Also I think his priorities were a little screwed up by then and he thought “telling my parents what’s really going on” = “they’ll take me away from my one opportunity to race.” ..He was willing to endure the harsh training in order to keep racing, bc in his mind losing racing was worse. He also thought they might not care because it’d been so long since they talked and what if they were mad at him?? …He was not thinking straight.)

Anyway. In chapter 2 of FT I mention he finally breaks after a really awful race and ends up sobbing to his mom over the phone inside some hotel room. He tells her everything. And he’s on a plane out of there literally the next day because his parents don’t play when it comes to their kid.
