Slipping into Zara’s door, Cam toes out of her shoes. The tightness in her chest loosens slightly. Enough that see feels like she’s home. The promise of whatever weighs her to dissipate is so close that her body begins to feel weighted. With a soft sigh, she pads across the room and wraps her arms around Zara’s back from behind. She buries her face between her shoulder blades and sinks into her. “Hey, baby. I’ve been missing you. Sorry for trying to avoid you. You know how I can get. What are you working on?”

“Many people,” she says, “And in different ways.”
“Of course, Amanda, Mina, and Alice: my good friends and the very best of me… But I’ll never stop caring for my old friends from Omerta: Nova, Pandora and Zara. Despite time and distance… I still think of them a lot. They were my sisters.” Aurora sighed, smiling wistfully. “There is also Emilia and Percy. And…” A sheepish laugh. “I guess Mason and Darius.” The smile fades away. “And, despite everything, my older brother, Vittorio, my father and my late mother will also have a place in my heart. Family is family.”

location: the terrace
overcrowded and chaotic, the bar was the predictable bottleneck, where impatient patrons jostled for the attention of overworked bartenders. heath, however, wasn’t the waiting type. with an audacious ease that turned heads, he slipped behind the counter, bypassing the line entirely. his hands moved with precision as he reached for a tumbler, dropping a sugar cube inside, before soaking it with a few generous dashes of angostura bitters. a quick muddle, a splash of water, and he added two cubes of ice, the sound crisp against the glass. the bourbon came next, poured with steady ease until the amber liquid shimmered just beneath the rim. he finished with a slice of orange peel, twisted tight before placing it inside the glass.
“zara, here!” the man called out, his voice rising above the hum of the crowd. he leaned casually against the bar, holding the old fashioned with a confidence that suggested he’d made hundreds before. his eyes found her easily, and a grin curled his lips as she turned "what’ll ya have, darlin’? ain’t no sense waitin’ in that line when i can fix it up right here" he added, tone smooth but playful

location: ice skating rink
the crisp december air nipped at heath’s face as he crouched by willa, adjusting the strap of her skate for what felt like the fifth time. she bounced impatiently, her breath forming tiny clouds in the cold "you don’t need to check it again! i’m fine!” she insisted, her voice carrying the determined tone he’d grown used to. heath smirked, tugging her scarf snug around her neck before letting her go, watching as she toddled toward the rink, her arms outstretched for balance. his heart clenched as she stepped onto the ice, her small frame navigating the smooth surface with more courage than grace.
standing back near the barrier, heath stuffed his hands into his coat pockets, his gaze fixed on willa skating alongside zara’s daughter. the holiday lights reflected in his eyes as he shifted his stance, the crunch of snow under his boots grounding him "please tell me ya know how to ice skate" the man said to zara, looking at her direction briefly "ya know, just in case we need to get out there and keep up with the gals"
It was mid-morning, the sun streaming in through a row of windows, casting light on bookshelves and paper streamers, and a dozen tiny faces peered up at Blue. All with sticky fingers and runny noses and wide, carefree smiles, parents huddled together, feet treading the edge of a multi-coloured carpet. All staring at him, some with amusement, others with confusion, wondering who this daft young man was. Too young to have published a book, surely. Younger than them, baby-faced and bright eyed. But here he was, book aloft, gesticulating wildly for the entertainment of toddlers, his voice sweet and lilting for some characters, low and gruff for others, chest swelling with pride when the group laughed in unison.
“And as the children, tucked into beds so neatly, tired from the day’s adventure, the birds sang their goodnight tune ever so sweetly.” Blue finished, and was met with a crescendo of pudgy hands clapping together. A dark-haired little girl in the back, mouth open and drooling, was startled awake. Parents performed muted little claps in the back, as though afraid to disobey the rules and puncture through the silence of the library.
Blue beamed, running a hand through his floppy hair, offering up a smile for everyone in attendance. As he lifted his head above the row of toddlers, to the place where he knew she’d be, the place where he felt intrinsically drawn, he offered Zara the biggest smile of all.
Children were scooped up into awaiting arms, and as they smiled and chirped their cursory ‘thank you!’’s after being much prodded from parents, Blue felt a pin-prick of longing in his chest, just a little. Blue knew he was young, but that still didn’t stop him from wanting.
He made his way through the crowd, clutching his book, to where Zara was waiting. His face immediately split into a wide smile, although he’d only been at her side a mere half an hour ago. It felt like too long.
“Hello again,” Blue greeted her, his free hand immediately seizing her waist. “Did you like it?”
Zara had heard And The Birds Sang Sweetly a million times, no doubt, but her opinion was still the only one that mattered.
