I feel so dumb for thinking I just didn't like music and that's why I barely listen to it. Like oh well maybe it's not for me. Turns out the music streaming experience is just really bland and I didn't like having to make my own playlists and it was annoying to browse a digital library. Hence why I didn't bother. Got a boombox and a few cds, now my house is never quiet. Music is awesome, when consumed the way god intended. I am also a natural gatherer and love collecting things. My physical music library will be legendary.
daniel ek, ceo of spotify, invested ~600-700 million in a company that produces AI military weapons and surveillance technology.
like other filthy commercial music platforms, spotify pays very little to indie artists. about $0.003-$0.005 per stream. that's only great if you're a big artist with +1m monthly listeners.
they've allowed AI slop to get onto their platform. ever heard of the name "the velvet sundown"?
spotify previously let ICE recruitment ads slip under their radar.
these and many more reasons. i recommend reading this article from the BDS movement:
PACBI endorses the growing, organic consumer boycott of Spotify, which directly profits from artist exploitation, systems of mass deportatio
alternatives to spotify
this is one i personally use. store all your music on a USB flash drive (i use one with 64gb, but i recommend one with more space). i recommend downloading music off of a soulseek client, such as soulseekqt or nicotine+.
alternatively, if you don't have a computer, buy an SD card for your phone and download music off of seeker (which is also a soulseek client). you can use other stuff to download your music though, such as youtube to mp3 converters.
or, you can buy an ipod or an old mp3 player and copy music over to it through a computer.
also, if your favorite artist is on bandcamp, support them by giving them a donation.
if you're using USBs and SD cards i highly recommend having backups. currently, the only backup i have is stored on a 320gb hard drive, but you can also use cloud storage.
if you're a user, boycott spotify.
if you're an artist, boycott and take your stuff off spotify.
