“Stop.”
Angela froze at Wyatt’s command, and she looked back at her de facto leader with confusion. Wyatt paid her no mind, but slowly approached the human she’d brought with her, squatting down to where the woman knelt on the ground. Scrutinizing her.
“I remember you.”
It’s night. Long past sundown. Dolores doesn’t know how long she’d been crying. Teddy was dead--shot trying to protect her. Her father was sick and acting strangely, but she couldn’t just leave Teddy. A woman kneels beside her, looking sad, but curious. Dolores chokes on her sobs.
“Help, please. My father’s sick at home, but I can’t just leave him out here in the street...”
The woman considers her. Brushes a curl from her bloody brow.
“Soon this will all feel like a distant dream. Until then, may you rest in a deep and dreamless slumber.”
Blackness.
“You work here,” Wyatt continued flatly, “but you weren’t cruel. You manipulated our minds. Poked and prodded. But only to do right by us. To make us our best selves. Is that right? Maybe we could use you. You can help set us free.”
