FND is not psychological.
PT: FND is not psychological. End PT
Yes, in the past FND, formerly known as conversion disorder, was considered entirely psychological, but new research proves that theory wrong.
Brain networks with FND misfire in predictable and measurable ways. In recent scans, researchers found that the brains of people with FND have overactivity in limbic regions, under-activity in motor control regions, communication disruptions between intention and action, and abnormal connectivity in attention networks.
Advanced imaging also shows meseauble differences in their brain structure, including changes in grey matter volume, in regions tied to movement, attention and emotional regulation, as well as alterations in white matter pathways that connect motor planning to executon and differences in volume and region in particular reigons. These structuarl changes were significant enough that a machine learning model sucsessfuly distinguished the MRI scans scans of brains with FND from healthy controls with 80% accuracy.
All this cosidered FND is not a psychological disorder. And while trauma and stress can be one of many contrubiting factors, they are not the root cause of the condition.
