DAY 8: GARFAKCY
Tee-hee, I love his name. It's ridiculous.
Garfakcy is Kharl's human henchman, and whether or not he's stuck in the form of a human child or just short is unclear. But his lifespan is being prolonged by some creation of Kharl's and so he is much older than he looks. He uses ash magic (also given to him by Kharl), but it is his wish to one day be made into a demon. And that just brings up all kinds of questions.
How did Garfakcy come to work for Kharl when Arinas has no human life? What would make Garfakcy want to work for a demon anyway? Why is he so loyal to Kharl? And why would Kharl put up with him and not just kill him right off the bat? Their relationship is quite peculiar. It's obvious that Garfakcy has a deep respect for Kharl, when he has pretty much none for anything else and is quite fond of killing things. (I'm afraid I can't talk about Garfakcy without talking about Kharl, haha.)
I think that part of the reason the relationship between Garfakcy and Kharl is so endearing is because it makes no sense. Kharl is a scatter-brained mad scientist and Garfakcy is a murdering neat freak. They both disregard the value of human life, but for different reasons, and they lead an oddly domestic lifestyle under quite fantastic circumstances. I mean, they have a whole discussion on Kharl's genius behind hiding the Three Treasures in another dimension, and all the while, Garfakcy is cleaning and serving tea and cake. So silly. Despite Garfakcy's complaints, you can tell he trusts and adores and respects Kharl to an amazing degree, and would do just about anything for him. I love Garfakcy and all his fun quirks.
Some random info for y'all:
I recently acquired a Japanese version of Volume 13, and there's one part that's always bothered me: Garfakcy says "You're no hero, Nohiro." Since you can't exactly say that in Japanese, I was wondering what the original diaologue was. And you know what, all that speech bubble originally said was "Your mysterious power returns my weapon to ash." It turns out, a lot of Garfakcy's snippy remarks in the English volume didn't have any sort of equivalent in the original, and while the meaning of most of it isn't exactly changed, it's far from an accurate translation. >.> I guess this translator just really wanted to give Garfakcy that chatty, badass personality. Or something.
