SOLO SHOW GEERT KOEKOECKX 10.02 - 03.03.2018 OPENING 10 FEBRUARY AT 18.00H Geert Koekoeckx’ paintings resemble collage-like theatre pieces – with a baroque twist - in which the painter, as the director, plays with the pictorial possibilities. He places odd objects on shaky, stacked pedestals while fluffy animals are jumping through hoops on multicolored stages. Often the depicted animals are deformed or have amputated limbs. Although it's never really grim. These contradictions are part of Koekoeckx' work. Scale differences are kaleidoscopically intertwined and elaborated details alternate with blurry zones, as a result of which the reality will unfold as a spectacular backdrop. Koekoeckx creates a smooth interaction between drawings from his imagination and images from old magazines and books (e.g. Medical encyclopedia), internet, comics ... One drawing is the - often very intuitive - cause for another addition and so on. In this way, his works gradually take shape. One could call it a modern version of the écriture automatique. For the artist the narrative aspect is inferior to the intuitive aspect although language plays a very important role; often a painting starts with the title.

NL/ Geert Koekoeckx ( °1983 Leuven) Meester in de Schilderkunst, Hogeschool Sint-Lukas Brussel De schilderijen van Geert Koekoeckx lijken wel barokke, collage-achtige theaterstukken waarin de schilder als regisseur de scepter zwaait en speelt met de picturale mogelijkheden. Vreemdsoortige objecten plaatst hij op wankel gestapelde sokkels en pluizig ogende dieren vertonen kunstjes op veelkleurige podia. Niet zelden zijn de afgebeelde dieren misvormd of hebben ze geamputeerde ledematen. Desondanks hebben ze vaak een hoge aaibaarheidsfactor en stralen ze eerder vriendelijkheid uit dan dreiging. Het zijn die tegenstellingen die een belangrijk onderdeel van zijn werk uitmaken. Schaalverschillen haken caleidoscopisch in elkaar, uitgewerkte details wisselen af met blurry zones, waardoor de werkelijkheid zich als een spectaculair decor ontvouwt.  Voor zijn beeldmateriaal gaat Koekoeckx minutieus en kritisch op zoek naar bruikbaar materiaal. Hier ontstaat een vlotte wisselwerking tussen tekeningen ontsproten uit zijn verbeelding en beelden afkomstig uit oude magazines en naslagwerken, internet, stripverhalen … De ene toevoeging geeft de – vaak erg intuïtieve – aanleiding tot een andere toevoeging. Zo krijgen zijn werken langzaamaan vorm. Je zou het kunnen benoemen als een moderne versie van de écriture automatique, eerder dan dat het een narratief gegeven betreft. Al speelt taal wel een zeer belangrijke rol; niet zelden start een schilderij bij de titel. Koekoeckx citeert vlot uit de kunstgeschiedenis: dit aan de hand van thematiek, compositie, vormentaal ...
