Since 1986, Continental Gourmet Sausage has been making the best German sausages in Southern California. The recipes are from the founder, a German Wurstmacher named Eugen Goetz. You’ll see Eugen’s many awards on the wall.

In addition to German sausage and lunchmeat, you’ll find imported German groceries, including candy, condiments, bread, pretzels, beer, etc. The made to order sandwiches (sausage, ham, salami) are crazy cheap ($7 and up). You can choose the bread (French roll or rye). They also have deli salads (kraut, German potato, macaroni, wurst).

Liverwurst sandwich ($7): very soft, like a pate, with dill pickles, lots of strong German mustard, mayo on thin rye bread. It was a very simple sandwich, but the liverwurst was so good (and it’s hard to find liverwurst).  They included some sauerkraut (really good kraut – soft, finely shredded, tangy) and a mini chocolate bar. The sandwich could have benefitted from more texture (something crunchy), not just a pickle on the side.

The outside of the building even looks German.

The other day Husband brought home some delicious eats from Eidelweiss, a German deli in SE Portland, including: two currywursts, two of some other kind of delicious spicy brat, some sauerkraut (*drool*), and some liverwurst (cravings die hard, y'all). 

Anyway, I finally got around to cooking the brats and the currywursts this evening. Just what does one top a currywurst with, anyway? I used Sriracha mayo, but something tells me that's not standard. I could just google it, of course, but where's the fun in that? 

Anyway, I never got around to trying a currywurst when we were in Germany (even tho there was a neat little shop selling them across from the Checkpoint Charlie Museum in Berlin and man, I am still kicking myself about that), but the ones Husband brought home are little (ok not so little) servings of heartburn heaven on a bun. If you ever get the chance to grab one from a reputable German purveyor, do it.
