It's the Most Scrungly Time of the Year ~~~!

For Christmas this year (or just for fun if you don't celebrate!), I wanted to show my appreciation for some sonky tumblr people that make my time here extra great. Whether you follow me, leave nice comments, make inspirational art/stories, or just show up in my notes a lot, I appreciate y'all. <3 There are TONS more that I wish I could have done something for, but I just didn't have the energy to hit everyone. ;o; I ran out of steam making digital pieces for everyone, too, as you can plainly see. 8D;;;

What the heck are these weird worm things, though? They're SCRUNGLEPAWS! Well, sort of. They're a species of mine called gherls- basically just funky little floaty guys. I really like designing characters, so I made y'all a bunch of scrunglies based on your avatars (and/or sonas, themes, vibes, ect). You're free to use the gherl I made for you in whatever way you like without worrying about species lore or anything like that. I mostly just wanted to make something universal for a large group of people and thought it would be a nice gesture. At least know that I thought of you and appreciate you! I hope they're not too out of left field and goofy! owo;;;;

I'll be making individual posts for each person with additional gift art (these are just the most polished/my faves of the batch!) on my main as not to flood this blog with 20+ gherl posts. xD I'll use this as a masterpost to link to all of those as I make them. I also made a post about what little "lore" their is to gherls just in case someone is into that. But again, you totally don't have to worry about that stuff; it's just for fun.

Hi, I just think your art and designs are really awesome. ouo I based your gherl off of Sonic from your swap au! Because he's so cool and had a lot of fun design elements to play around with! Also, some sketchy "plushies" from when I was considering doing little plush/ornament adoptables instead. Idk why they look so grumpy. xD

You have a lot of really cool and creative aus. I especially love Actual Shadow-Shadow and the puppets! And of course, you make mightourge cute as beans! ^^ I love that you put freckles on like, everyone. It's so cute!

Your gherl is based on a Mighty/Scourge fusion! He's super scruffy, has some big 'ol fanglies, armor plating down his back, and big chunky armadillo claws (because they're cute!). In legs!mode, the tail shrinks and the armor goes down the legs. The ornament is an early idea from when I was going to make ornament adoptables instead of gherls. It has super simplified versions of Scourge and Mighty sorta doing a yin-yang and I thought it was really cute. ^^

These are actually unrelated to that ask I sent you a bit ago. I'll have to post those doodles some other time (they're buried somewhere). Anyway, I still went a bit all over the place with design ideas. I dunno what it is; your avvie just gives me Ideas. Also, the potential to lean into the corvus aspect and just incorporate feathers and birb feet all over the place. Gherls aside, I also made a dragon and gryphon-ish thing just 'cause.

The temptation to elaborate on the design was strong, but I kept it sleek and simple like an anonymous cat should be. I heard she keeps a whole flock of chickens in the void of her mane's hammerspace. What other secrets lie within?!

GHERLS???

So. Gherls. What's up with those? Basically, I made a group of characters that I was going to write comics about inbetween all the Sonic posting. Since they shared a similar design structure, I just gave them a species name. Simple as that, really. There's not much to them. Obviously, I never posted any of those comics. But you might have seen a sneaky little gherl here or there in the margins on my sonky doodles.

The name is derived from "ghoul" and one other silly thing that's not important. It's pronounced like "girl" but with a breathy "h" noise at the end. Almost like it's spelled gerlhhh. Because I did almost spell it that way (sans all the h's).

In their relaxed state, they have no legs (ie: NOODLE). Some can float, some can swim, some just flop/slither around. However, they can "put on their legs" for certain occasions. They just spontaneously appear. Or they can grow. Whatever is more funny for the situation. Generally, gherls don't want to have legs because they just want to chill. It's sort of akin to "Ugh, do I have to go to the store? I don't feel like putting on pants legs!" But also, you can just draw them with legs whenever the situation calls for it, like if they're dancing, riding a bike, or something.

Gherls are generally pretty cartoony, goofy, and don't have to make a lot of sense. They were created to be goobers in silly little comics; they're not meant to be taken seriously. I specifically made them to be fast and easy to draw in my style (does not apply to digital- I'm always slow in that). The designs I made for other people don't necessarily follow this convention, but they sure were fun to make. :D

The most lore-y thing about gherls is that they each have a positive and a negative. The positive is basically the thing that makes life worth living for the gherl, something they seek out, or a personal moral of some sort. The negative is very closely related to the positive, but is something that completely saps the gherl of energy and/or freaks them out. Positive/negative combo examples: water/swimming, cats/dogs, affection/physical contact, fear/death, childlike wonder/actual children. They're generally played for laughs, but can also be poignant if you want.

I have four gherl ocs and they're all idiots. Except Taru, she's pretty cool. With them in mind, I had gherls as a literally asexual species. Like, no sexual attraction and they bud to reproduce. But they're also immensely silly fictional thingamabobs, so ship 'em if you want to!

I think that's about it? They're just really silly, nonserious, and fun.

Edit: Oh yeah! They pretty much always have dark, if not fully black, basic/chunky-shaped ears. Kind of like, the one universal design thing besides being a noodle. xD

My fave is just drawing the same character over and over, all smooshed together, usually in uninspired poses. Mangey is my favorite creature; all 0w0, CB, and >:]

Your art is super duper gorgeous and makes my eyes very happy. You always have super interesting takes, story ideas, ect on Nine and I love reading them! OUO And I still adore that Mangey+Nine fic! <3 Nine fans are lucky af to have you making such awesome stuff all the time~ 'w'

Your gherls are based off of Nine and a blunt-headed tree snake, of course. I definitely could have done some more concepts sketches for the Nine one, but I think the snakey came out cute. The legged one is just extra, extra goofy! The first doodle is when I was considering doing plush/ornament adopts instead of these silly critters.
