The Four Shades
Asmoday—the Ruler of Space
Istaroth—the Ruler of Time
Ronova—the Ruler of Death
Naberius/Rhinedottir—the Ruler of Life
The Gods' Limits teaser trailer has surged through the Genshin community, and for good reason. The Four Shades have haunted the duration of Genshin Impact for almost its entirety, and now, we finally have a real bone to gnaw on.
Here's a few things I noticed:
It's evident the Statue of the Omnipresent God in Inazuma was never Istaroth at all, but of Ronova instead
Naberius explicitly states that, ever since she merged with Rhinedottir, she no longer possesses any agency, essentially confirming that Rhinedottir is the Ruler of Life now
Istaroth's demeanor is far more—remote than expected. Indifferent, even. Whether this is a deliberate ruse or something else entirely remains to be seen
Asmoday's absence and Istaroth's comment about switching sides is not helping Paimon beat the long-standing allegations
Ronova's eyes take on a floral pattern, much like Hu Tao's, and while I don't necessarily believe that there'll be some connection between the two, I like the fact that the Director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor has a design which echoes the literal Ruler of Death
Is there anything else you noticed?
HAHA SHADE OF LIFE YOU ARE DNA CODED I WINNNN(genetics spintrest)
anyway, me personally i stay losing my mind over istaroth. love you queen, losing the dgaf war, reversing the tree back to life, we all saw that sorry bro
shakes Naberius and Rhinedottir back and forth. im encapsulated with your dynamic but what the hell is up with your hair. hyv why have you done this. ALSO I HOPE WE GET BETTER LOOKS AT WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE SEPARATE. cause it seems rhine is the black part of the outfit and naberius is the white part, as seen in the little. the thing where nabe is blue and stuff?
show me your face They. i want a looksie~
also, using they/them for the shades bc they are clearly Above Gender. they just look like that man maybe the primordial one was a girl idk ^-^ but given they are Fem Presenting im going to assume they are all assigned she/her at hyv
I don’t think Paimon is Istaroth, but replaying the Lantern Rite epilogue on my alt account has made me think.
Paimon feels the Traveler and Xiao were gone a long time, but for the Traveler it was mere moments. This could obviously have some relation to events like Sumeru’s dream samsara where they were separated and couldn’t communicate. However, I thought back to the events of the 2.7 archon quest.
When everyone is trapped in the chaotic space, they experience time differently. The Traveler feels it’s only been a day since they all fell, but Paimon thinks it’s been 20.
I’m not too good with theorizing, but I don’t think Istaroth and Paimon are the same being (as I do believe Istaroth was the voice at the end of the 3.3 aq) but I do wonder if they have some connection. It could also just be a random character quirk with no deeper meaning, but it’s fun to think about.
