this semester i had the pleasure to work with rafael rosado, illustrator of children’s book series “giants beware!”, as part of animation lab team to create a short film based off the books! i was tasked with creating background characters and these five darlings were my final product :) i’m looking forward to going on to see the film through to completion! (and big thanks to annie lahue to being my colorist! she definitely took some of the weight off my shoulders as i was lining)

Come on by December 12th and meet highly-talented, all-ages writer Jorge Aguirre of GIANTS BEWARE and DRAGONS BEWARE!

Jorge Aguirre is an East Coast based writer. He wrote the kids graphic novels, GIANTS BEWARE (First Second Books/Macmillan), which the New York Times called, a “rollicking fun story.” He also wrote its sequel, DRAGONS BEWARE (May 2015), and he has already written the third book in the CHRONICLES OF CLAUDETTE. Jorge also produces TV for kids. He's worked for Nick, Jr., PBS, and he's currently the co-creator and co-producer of GOLDIE & BEAR, a new animated series for Disney, Junior, which premiered in November 2015.

Giants Beware

I came across a book around Christmas called Giants Beware, a cute looking graphic novel (200 pages) which looked like something my kids would like (a boy and a girl, age 6.5). They've been busily reading through their Christmas and library stacks and haven't gotten to it yet, but I read it in the bath last night. Really cute book and I'm looking forward to the sequel (already preordered it). It's about a precocious little girl who doesn't believe all the stories she's been told about the scary world beyond the walls of her little town. She wants to leave the town and slay a giant to make a name for herself. The story unfolds showing her solving every problem by hitting it with her toy sword, lying to her friends to get her way, sneaking around, and generally being a twerp. There are a lot of little things hinted at for world building which make me wonder what is really going on in and out of the city. Throughout the story we see our protagonist learn that there are consequences to lying and that most of the time violence isn't the best answer. That all being said, I have some issues with the book. The protagonist is strongly androgynous. This isn't so bad by itself, she's a little girl who is more boyish than anything, but it's hard to remember she's a girl until you're randomly reminded of it in ways that make it feel like more of a gimmick than an actual part of the story. Gender not being important is awesome, but this almost feels like the editor said "girl power is in, change the protagonist to is a girl" and all they did was change the name. The only person of color is the blacksmith's... Helper? Friend? Old adventuring buddy certainly. He is a supporting character with no actual story shown and is a supplier of MacGuffins with a funny costume. He's shown in attire different from everybody else. Most adults are dumb or evil. The father is mostly distant and doesn't support his son's passions while seeming to pat his daughter on the head and letting her get away with murder. The ruler of the town is incompetent and neglectful. His wife is flat out stupid. All of the townsfolk are dumb and lazy and greedy. The other kids we see are bullies. The target market isn't clearly defined. It seems like it's targeted at 8-12, but the characters are drawn decidedly younger than that. So, it's fun and interesting and I enjoyed it, but I wish they had done a better job with it in a lot of ways. Not problematic enough to avoid, but there are likely to be talking points with your kids.
