With this, for a pastel rather large-sized (91 × 73 cm) portrait Marie-Suzanne Roslin, née Giroust, gained entrance to the Académie de peinture et de sculpture. It shows the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, after whom the place Pigalle is named, in the costume of the Order of Saint Michael. In the background is the statue of Louis XV that gained him this order.

The sitter was Marie-Suzanne Roslin, née Giroust, the artist's wife, dressed á la Bolognaise. Marie-Suzanne Roslin was an artist in her own right, her pastel portraits were admired for the colors and the rendering of skin. Four years after this portrait was painted, she died of breast cancer, only thirty-eight years old.
