I started looking at the type of houses the squirrels had in the first episode, because I was thinking about making a village scene for a few projects I have been working on, and wanted to figure out a style to go with.
They appear to be somewhat traditional North Korean houses with round porthole windows, sliding Hanok doors, and a porch.
The big two story building appears to be some sort of meeting hall.
It does have rectangular windows on the sides, though.
Uncle Gom's house seems to specifically imply that Squirrel Village houses are Choga.
Choga is a type of straw thatched-roof house used by peasants and farmers in traditional North Korean society, although not used as much anymore since the roofs tend to rot.
Since they were more or less handmade by the farmers, there does not seem to be one conforming style for the most part, other than the one preserved historical village the Kims came from.
As such, I am thinking that the full view of a house in squirrel village for what I am working on, as a draft, may look somewhat like this:
And since some have porthole windows,
Interestingly enough, Geumsaegi (or Geumbitdarami), as the village leader, appears to have a giwa, which is the same type of house but with a tile roof, instead.
Later, in episode 11, there are two story houses (the one on the left might be the meeting hall) that appear to be giwa next to the regular choga houses, which makes me think that there may be some reconstruction going on.
These are the alternate houses I have for this, which I partially created to help serve as an idea for the farmhouse from Lily Bell in the Thorn Thicket (although that would be stone, not wood).
Bamsaegi's two story house in S2 is representative of a more modern house. Either Squirrel Village modernized even more later, or, as a scientist/soldier, he lived elsewhere.
