My Favorite Things # 29 Antique Glass Insulator

My Grandmother had a bunch of these that she used to put out in her garden.  I always liked them and I got some of them after she died.  They fairly easy to find at flea markets or on ebay.  These things mostly date from the the first half of the 20th century.  They were the attachment points for electrical and telephone wires to the poles.  Glass doesn’t conduct electricity every well, so they kept the electricity from being lost or damaging the pole.  Here’s what they looked like in use:

Around the fifties they started being replaced by ceramics insulators, and better insulated wires.

While searching for these  pictures, I also found these disk shaped glass insulators.  They look like they might still be in use, and are also cool looking.

These pictures are a few years old, but I haven’t posted them yet.

Intact telegraph poles are rare around here because AT&T ripped them all out and threw them away, rather than letting them rot in place like usual. Those that are left behind were mostly too rotten to pick up in one piece.

The whole pole top and crossarm in the first picture were good, thanks to a heavy coating of creosote, which gives them that orange-brown color. The pole and top crossarm in the second picture were completely rotten internally. The bottom crossarm was alright, though. I combined the best pieces to get the display you see here!
