The County of San Francisco’s page has more likes than the County of San Diego’s page; however, San Diego posts 2.35 per day whereas, San Francisco only posts 1.55 posts per week. Perhaps it is due to the limitation of posts and/or the time of day when the post is posted. It may also be due to the content of the posts as well, which maybe the reason to catch people’s attention. In San Diego, the top posts were about the election, animals, Veteran’s Day, and the military, which targets the population of San Diego well because of the city being a big supporter of the military as we have many Naval and Marine bases. However, San Francisco’s top posts focused on the election and weekend plans like sporting events and movies, while promoting their public transportation. I think both pages segments and targets their audience population well; however, I think San Francisco’s content may be more interesting than San Diego’s because people like to find out things to do. Although San Francisco has more likes, San Diego’s engagement rate is higher, indicating that people are paying attention to the posts. I believe audience is engagement is more important than the amount of likes to decide effectivity because people can blindly like the posts without getting the message. The County of San Francisco has a higher population than San Diego and San Francisco is a business-driven city, which may influence how many likes the page gets because more businesses use social media to promote and advertise. San Francisco has more check-ins than San Diego, which may have a great influence on post content quality because check-ins allows the audience to learn more and go to the place that post is promoting. In addition, San Francisco varies its posts type as it may be more effective in grabbing and maintaining the audience’s intention.

Equal Rights by Peter Tosh and Get Up, Stand Up by Bob Marley, both of these songs are advocating to become advocates against political injustices. Both artists want the audience to become active and make a change when there is social injustices. The route of persuasion that is being used is the Central route of persuasion because someone that is listening to this type of music is likely to be someone interested in social justice and politics. I do not think they are violating a contract.

The health communication piece I found with the 4 goals of EE is Hand Over The Tobacco (HOTT).

Provide a primary tobacco prevention as well as

secondary cessation activities and resources.

2) explain what you think the destination is.

The destination is within the LGBT community.

3) identify the channel and discuss if you think it matched the intent of the piece well.

The channel that was used was, print advertisement in the Bars and Clubs in the LGBT community. I do think it matched the intent of the piece well because they specifically went out to that community and engaged with them face to face, which is the most effective way.

I think the best type of contracts to get people to change their behaviors and live a healthy lifestyle would be the Entertainment context using central route. The most recent time I experienced both types of contracts was in this class. I do not have cable television, and live in Mexico where I have very poor internet connection. The both types of contracts I have experienced recently are through this class. I believe the best contract is the Entertainment context, because the receiver can empathize and make it more relatable thus being more effective in establishing a contract, changing behaviors or living a healthier lifestyle. After watching the video with the family man and pretending to be in a car accident and his wife and daughter becoming his seatbelt made me think about I have a family as well that loves me and wants me to be safe just like the man in the video.

Powerless (Say What You Want) by Nelly Furtado and Stupid Girls by P!nk both focus on women empowerment. Both songs’ primary goal/message is to motivate women to be more than a pretty face, that the media does not does not define their beauty, and that women are smart, powerful, and are capable of many things beyond what society perceives and labels women. Nelly Furtado’s song uses a central route, whereas P!nk’s song uses the peripheral route. Furtado’s central route requires high involvement; women who are already claimed feminists will most likely pay attention to this song because the choice of words in the lyrics are stronger and more professional. I think this song is effective in making women realize how much society defines women’s beauty; she states, “they took her passion and her gaze and made a poster…we take the culture and contort perhaps only to distort what we are hiding”. Her choice of words is powerful and requires the listener to understand her message because her words targets emotions towards self-definition and acceptance. P!nk’s song uses less educated language and demeans a certain type of women which contradicting her purpose in empowering women because she calls these women “stupid girls”, the ones “dancing in the video next to 50 cent” and “with their itsy bitsy doggies and their teeny-weeny tees”; this is not an effective song for a women empowerment campaign. She uses a peripheral route because requires low-involvement as it is effective for women who are not aware or other audiences who do not care about women perception. If the audience does not get offended by the lyrics, but rather see it humorous, her peripheral route is good for getting people aware of women empowerment—women being more than a certain type of beauty and rather focusing on and praising women achievements.

I would categorize Example 1 as an entertainment type of mass communication because it is a satire of the election. It pokes fun at Hillary Clinton rather than asking her serious questions about her campaign. Comedian, Zach Galifianakis uses Donald Trump, the email scandal, White privilege, and her voting history, and her pneumonia as jokes. This shows that this communication method is meant to entertain the public while activating the audience’s thoughts on the election. Hillary Clinton may be sponsored or supported by Funny or Die, which is known to be purely comedy on YouTube; the channel is activating and advocating for Clinton in the election. Clinton may be using this channel to reach the Millennials to win their vote for the presidential election because she knows that the target audience is heavily influenced by YouTube channels like Funny or Die.
