The Magician, Godfrey Dowson, from the Hermetic Tarot deck, 1977
Any Level 9 fans out there? This poster of the box art for Emerald Isle by Godfrey Dowson was included with the game. Signed on the crate bashing into the rocks.
"Every solution is made according to expediency and that every matter which dissolves the Moon also dissolves the Sun." (The Golden Dawn)
Looking to the five (of Swords) we see the central sword has shattered the framework of the rose and divided/split apart the (previously inter-locked) swords on either side - thereby breaking a stalemate. This central sword symbolises "Truth" and its action requires now, a new framework to be established.
This is the destructive "force" of our own nature being turned inwardly, destroying old beliefs and practises that we cling to - leaving "room" for new ones to establish themselves.
We find here Geburah in Yetzirah, the dismantling of that which is no longer required, forcing us to begin anew - providing "a necessary "corrective" in our lives by tearing away all that is useless, undesirable or out-dated" (Robert Wang)
"Everything Flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates." (The Kybalion)
In the six (of Cups) Tiphareth in Briah, we find the influence of Tiphareth on the mental world - the beginning of pleasure (Sun in Scorpio). The lotuses are regenerating and water flows from them into an organised framework of Cups, nurturing their Souls.
The Sun in Scorpio shows transformation through regeneration driven by will and emotion - the letter of the Law is imposed by the Self, enabling us to communicate with the Higher Self, encouraging self-improvement.
"The great weakness of Christianity lies in the fact that it ignores rhythm. It balances God with Devil instead of Vishnu with Siva. Its dualisms are antagonistic instead of equiliberating, and therefore can never issue in the functional third in which power is in equilibrium. Its God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and does not evolve with an evolving creation, but indulges in one special creative act and rests on His laurels." (Dion Fortune)
The six (of Wands) inevitably follows, with the influence of Tiphareth in the World of Pure Spirit.
"Tiphareth is the light of the Soul, on which the life of the Soul depends." (Robert Wang) and is shown here residing in the centre of the crossed Wands, consolidating power, aluding to victory through unification.
"Of a truth, God Himself discovered this thing to the first man, to confirm his hopes of those three supernatural mysteries - the Incarnation, Regeneration and Resurrection" (Thomas Vaughn)
We see the Sun in a Fire Element, strong energies contribute towards establishing new ideas and new frameworks, Jupiter (the north node of The Moon) in Leo emphasising the grand scale of the task ahead, where everything is expressed to the fullest (even the smallest idea) and vision is unlimited.

The Hermetic Tarot looks very plain at first. The cards are all in Black and White, which may be a turn off for some. But the cards are rich in the symbolism used by the Golden Dawn long ago. This is a great deck for serious study.
