Charlie's Angels!AU, 'cause Knox reminded me too much of Hammer and Charlie is a millionaire.
This is… just tragically belated, and I started it but then got stuck, then got distracted… let’s say moon and I have spawned WAY TOO MANY FIC-CHIlDREN LATELY. What are we at now, four verses?
But I watched Charlie’s Angels today and was like “You know, I should get on that.”

Darcy’s bubblegum popped loudly as they sat down. She grinned, leaning forward provocatively.
"Good morning. Nice shiner, Bucks."
Bucky rolled his eyes, grinning. Natasha smirked and Steve chuckled, stretching out back into the couch, arm stretching out behind Bucky’s shoulders.
"How’s the boy toy, Nat?"
"He is very good.”
Darcy laughed lowly at the suggestive tone, before being interrupted by the ringing of the phone. She pressed a button.
"Hey, Tones," she chirped.
"Darcy." He sounded amused, even with the electronics covering his voice. "Morning Avengers."
"Good morning, Tony," they chorused.
"From what I’ve seen, good work on the last job. Minimal explosions, even, which I mean is less damage, so -"
"Tones," Darcy interrupted.
"…Right." He cleared his throat. "So your new mission, should you choose to accept it."
Bucky snorted, sharing a grin with Steve. Nat rolled her eyes.
"Last night, there was a break-in at Hammer Tech. Along with some unidentified technology, owner and CEO Justin Hammer was taken. We’re not sure by who, or why. His head of Research, Vanko-"
"Is probably guilty," Bucky muttered.
"Bucky," Steve muttered.
"…Actually, he’s the one that contacted us. If I was going to get rid of the person in charge of a company, I’d definitely be the one to report it. Make myself look good.”
"Tones," Darcy said, rolling her eyes. "These conversations are recorded you know."
"And that is blackmail," he retorted. "Whatever. Avengers, you’ll be meeting with Vanko this afternoon, see what intel he has. I trust you’ll be able to take care of this quickly."
~*~*~
"So, Vanko is sketchy as fuck," Bucky announced as soon as the guy had left, a folder about Hammer’s recent robotics development in their hands. Natasha was flipping through it.
"Hammer presented the prototype for this at last year’s Stark Expo. There was an altercation at the time with the owner of Stark Industries, Anthony Stark. His CEO, Pepper Potts, had to call security to separate them."
"You think Stark might have done this?" Steve sounded curious.
"Stark is known for his arrogance, and for being one of the biggest names in robotics. If Hammer was about to show him up? Maybe."
"So, because he doesn’t want anyone doing better than him at his own game, he’d kidnap a guy?"
"It’d distract from the tech theft, I suppose," Steve mused. "And it’s a place to start, at least."
"Still say Vanko’s in on this," Bucky muttered, but he followed them to the car.
"Lucky for us, Stark Industries is hosting a charity gala tonight. Time to bring out the tuxes, boys."
~*~*~
"Well. That was surprisingly simple," Natasha murmured.
"Shut up," Steve muttered, blushing.
"He’s still staring, Stevie," Bucky teased.
"Jerk."
"Use it to your advantage," Natasha pressed, flicking a cold, dismissive glance at the man trying to get her attention. He paled and dashed away. "See what you can get from him, if you can get a tracker on him or something. I’ve got Potts in my sight, I’m going to see what I can get there."
"But-"
"Just give him your ‘aw shucks’ routine," Natasha said distractedly. "Now hush, this woman is sharp, she won’t miss that I’m distracted by you two nattering in my ear."
Bucky eased his way through the crowd of suits and gowns to get closer to Steve.
Mr. Stark was talking with another three businessmen, but his eyes kept sliding over to Steve. They paused on Bucky, lingered, before he snapped them back to his conversation, smiling and laughing.
"I don’t know how to do this," Steve muttered. "This is the kind of thing I leave to you and Nat. I’m not cut out for this - I’m too - too…"
"Oblivious to any and all flirting and innuendo? Yeah Steve. I know."
Steve looked at him, but Bucky was smiling. Whatever strange note he’d heard in his voice, it wasn’t to be seen on his face.
"Look, just go to him, introduce yourself. Media says Stark used to be a pretty smooth player, until he cut it down the last few years. If you make even half an effort, he’ll do the rest."
Bucky squeezed Steve’s arm. Nodding, Steve started to walk over, slipping through and around people. Stark glanced over again, and without taking his eyes off of Steve, excused himself from the conversation.
"I was wondering how long you’d take to come over," he said, sounding faintly amused. His voice was smooth, but not quite how Steve had expected it to sound, though he couldn’t pin how.
"I’m Steve," he said, and it felt awkward as hell. "I uh, I noticed…"
"That I kept checking you out? I’d hope so, I wasn’t trying to be subtle."
Steve blushed. This seemed to make Mr. Stark grin even wider.
"Mr. Stark, I-"
"Tony. You say Mr. Stark, I expect either reporters, or my father, and neither of those are good."
It would be… odd, to call him Tony. “Okay,” Steve said slowly. “Tony.”
His grin crinkled the corners of his eyes, unlike any of the smiles he’d been handing out to people previously.
"Is your boyfriend there going to join us?"
"What?" Steve frowned, following Stark’s pointed gaze to Bucky, who was leaning against a pillar and sipping a flute of champagne. "He’s not - Bucky’s not my boyfriend."
"No?" Stark raised a brow, unconvinced. "You sure about that?"
"I think I’d know if I was dating someone!" Steve protested, feeling angry. "He’s been my best friend since we were kids."
The look Stark gave him was… was pitying, and Steve decided abruptly that he wasn’t going to do this. They could get information on this asshole some other way.
"Wait, I’m sorry, Steve-" He reached out, grabbing Steve’s arm, and without thinking, Steve twisted out of the hold and grabbed his hand, twisting it.
Stark was silent, staring with wide… oddly hurt eyes.
Steve let go quickly, turning and pushing through the people to get somewhere less crowded.
"What the hell was that about?" Bucky demanded. "You almost broke his hand!"
"Drop it," Steve said, hands tightening on the railing of the balcony he’d escaped to.
"If you two are done being dramatic, I’ve got a passcard off of Potts’ body guard. We’re good to go do some in-house snooping." Natasha sounded both smug and exasperated.
Steve brushed past Bucky.
Sighing, Bucky followed, casting only a brief glance back to see Stark watching them, looking troubled.
~*~*~
"Avengers." Tony sounded… odd, and not in the usual mechanical-voice way. "Good work finding Hammer."
"I really appreciate it," Justin Hammer said. "Did you have any luck finding my tech though? Or getting the guy that stole it?"
"No," Steve admitted. "We are checking the systems to see, but-"
"Whose systems?" Hammer demanded. "I bet it was Stark. You’re checking him out, right?"
"We-"
"That’s confidential, Hammer," Darcy interrupted with a cool calm. "If we find anything, we’ll give you the evidence, but until then it stays in our hands."
"Oh, of course, sure," Hammer babbled.
"It will be here?" Vanko asked. "Is your building secure enough for that?"
"It has the best security on the market," Tony replied, shortly. "We’ll be in touch with you when we know more."
Darcy was staring at the speaker, so Bucky got up to open the door, offering a charming grin as Vanko and Hammer walked out. Hammer paused, smiling at him.
"I wanted to thank you again, for saving me."
"Sure thing, buddy," Bucky chuckled. "Not a problem."
Hammer squeezed his arm in thanks and left.
Vanko glared at them, all of them, before muttering to himself as he left as well.
"I’m still thinking he’s in on this," Bucky said.
"Vanko’s father and Stark’s father did do business together. Perhaps the sons are as well," Natasha mused.
"That didn’t end on friendly terms, if I recall. I don’t see how Anthony Stark or Ivan Vanko would get past that enough to cooperate," Steve pointed out.
"Well, when you’ve figured it out, let me know," Tony said, voice… sharp. He hung up while Steve, Bucky, and Natasha stared at the speaker in surprise.
~*~*~
Natasha glared at the man slumped to the floor.
So. Bucky had been right.
Vanko was involved.
And he’d fucked up her date with Clint.
~*~*~
Steve slumped to the floor, panting. Someone had tried to kill him. With a hailstorm of bullets. His little trailer was in pieces. Probably unsalvageable.
Snarling, he punched his fist into the ground and shoved to his feet. Yanking his phone out of his pocket when he got a text alert, he read that Nat had been attacked to, but had gotten a name out of her experience. He dialed Bucky.
"Someone just tried to kill me," he said. "Nat’s been attacked too, and got a name out of it. Do not say I told you so. Just get to Hammer’s place and get him somewhere unknown.”
"Roger that, Rogers," Bucky said.
~*~*~
"Well fuck me. Didn’t see that one coming," Bucky admitted.
Hammer smirked, all smug self satisfaction. “I am pretty good,” he said. Bucky rolled his eyes, casting a quick glance at Vanko.
"Hurry up, I want to get this done by tomorrow night."
"Alright, fine. You’re not really the one I feel the need to give my speech to, anyway," Hammer chuckled. "I’ve got a favor of humiliation to repay. But first, I really plan on making him hurt." He lifted the gun and shot.
Bucky fell out of the damn window.
~*~*~
"Darcy!" Natasha shouted.
"No," Bucky said quickly. "Vanko and Hammer have her, they told me before shooting me.”
"Oh stop whining, it’s just one bullet, it barely scratched you," Natasha grumbled.
"Why would they want Darcy?" Steve asked. "They have the information on Stark - was that the whole point of this? Information on Stark’s systems?"
"I told you - they had an altercation," Natasha said slowly. "I was thinking this was Stark coming after Hammer - but it’s the other way around."
"Hammer said something about humiliation. Stark must have done something, and now Hammer’s going to get back at him for it." Bucky clenched his fists.
"And he used us to do it." Steve closed his eyes.
"We have no idea where they are," Natasha said. She’d sound calm about it to anyone else, but Steve could hear the frustration and despair. Once they finished whatever they needed Darcy for… she was dead.
"But we know where they’re going to be." Steve straightened, glaring. "So let’s go meet him there."
~*~*~
"I still don’t see why you needed Darcy," Bucky sneered. "You could have just grabbed the info and dropped her off somewhere out of the way, not taken her with you. She’s a fucking hassle to handle, I should know. That girl drunk is a handful."
Hammer laughed. “Oh wow. You guys really don’t know, do you?”
"Know what?" Bucky asked, wiggling his hands in the bonds. Sloppy.
"That the guy backing your little private investigation agency is the one you were blaming for my kidnapping!”
For a moment, it didn’t click. Then-
Tony.
Tony Stark.
They’d been treating their own boss as a fucking suspect.
He’d been hitting on Steve - oh god Steve was going to blush so red when Bucky pointed that out.
"So you need Darcy to get him to call, personally."
"Bingo. And here I thought you were just the brawn." Hammer grinned, nearly sneered. "Anthony will call Darcy to talk to his precious Avengers, and I’ll be there instead. He’ll be busy negotiating with me over her life - and yours too now, I suppose - while Vanko gets in close. He’ll plant evidence pinning Stark firmly for the murders, and I get to watch Stark’s world fall apart around him from the comfort of my living room couch.”
"Fuck you, buddy," Bucky sneered right back at him.
"Now, now. Let’s save that for later."
Bucky was going to bite that guy’s fingers off if he came closer with that duct tape.
"Mother-!"
Bucky had suffered way worse than a backhand before. It bought Hammer enough time to slap duct tape over his mouth, though.
~*~*~
"…Hammer. Where’s Darcy?"
"Oh, I think she slipped to the restroom."
"Right. Well then, let me talk to the Avengers."
"They seem to be a bit tied up at the moment," Hammer replied, grinning over at Bucky. "Is there a message you’d like to pass along to them, Anthony?"
Tony was silent.
Hammer laughed. “What, someone finally made you speechless, Stark?”
"What do you want Hammer?"
"To ruin you like you did me!" Hammer shouted.
"Just because your design was flawed and going to kill whatever pilot stepped into those deathtraps you were claiming were-"
"You lost me over half my contracts, Anthony! You humiliated me! And now, I’m going to do the same to you."
Two guards dragged in Darcy.
"You fucking stupid-"
"Darcy!" Tony sounded panicked.
"Tones, do not do anything stupid!"
"Yeah, Anthony, don’t do anything stupid. It might cost people their lives."
"Hammer, you son of a-"
"Ah, ah," Hammer cautioned. He picked up a brick, walked over to Darcy and dropped it on her foot.
"Alright Hammer. You want me humiliated? Okay. How do you want to do this?"
"Well, first of all, I’d love to hear you bed. Go ahead, Anthony. Beg for me to be generous."
Bucky could hear him breathing over the phone. “Justin, please. Please don’t hurt her. Or the Avengers, they’re - they don’t even know who I am, okay? Hurting them isn’t going to… it’ll hurt me, yeah, but wouldn’t it be more satisfying to do that personally? Whatever you want to do to them, you can do to me. Just… just let them go. A fair exchange.”
"Hmm… I’m not really convinced, Anthony," Hammer taunted.
Bucky slipped his hands free. Hammer’s attention was on Tony, who was still begging, instead of the cameras, which showed Natasha and Steve approaching the room quickly.
"Justin please, don’t hurt them. Please. I will - I’ll go to the press, humiliate myself, give up all my money, whatever you want, just let them go!”
Hammer laughed. “Well, while I enjoyed that, I think I’m going to really enjoy this…”
He pointed the gun at Darcy, who glared at him steadily.
Bucky lunged forward.
Steve and Natasha burst into the room.
The gun went off.
~*~*~
"You jerk," was the first thing Bucky heard.
He grinned faintly. “If your punk ass didn’t take so long….”
Natasha’s sharp nails flicked his ear and he whined. “Not nice. Not nice at all.”
He dragged his eyes open, groaning at the light before his eyes began to adjust. Steve and Natasha were on either side of the bed, Steve clutching his hand tightly between both of his.
Darcy was there, standing at the foot of his bed, balancing on crutches. She grinned at him, one eye black and blue.
"You look like hell," he told her.
"You’re one to talk," she teased. Shifting, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a phone. She pressed a number, setting it on the bed.
"Darcy, I told you not to-"
"Good morning, Tones," she said cheerfully. "Guess who woke up?"
"Is he okay? Damn it, you said you’d call me-"
"Tones." Darcy was amused, it was clear in her voice and the twist of her lips. "They’re all right here. With me. And you’re on speakerphone."
"…I hate you."
"Don’t hang up," Bucky said quickly.
"I - fine. But I have a meeting in fifteen minutes so whatever you want to yell at me about, make it snappy."
"I’m not going to yell," Bucky said.
Steve was red next to him, head ducked down.
"Tony. Just… thank you."
"I… have to go."
~*~*~
Bucky leaned back against the wall of the Stark Industries lobby, watching as Steve and Stark’s CEO chatted.
"Of course I knew about his little side-project, but he wouldn’t tell me too much about the people he’d hired for it," she said.
"So, uh, at the charity gala…"
"Where Natasha stole my keycard? Yeah, Tony had some groveling to do when I told him about losing it there. He knew you guys had to have taken it." Her eyes narrowed. "He was pretty upset after that night. I’d seen him checking out a certain someone but he wouldn’t tell me how it went."
"Uh." Steve blushed.
She hummed, raising a brow, and glanced over at Bucky.
"I take it there was a misunderstanding?"
"On… my part, not his," Steve admitted.
Pepper Potts glanced between the two of them. “It’s only because Darcy okay’d it that I’m helping you two.”
"And we thank you for that," Bucky spoke up.
"Pepper, what meeting did I forget this… time."
The Tony Stark that greeted them was not the suit-and-tie from the gala or media. He was in what should be an illegally tight tank top, and worn in jeans, and had greased smudged on his nose.
Bucky watched Steve swallow heavily and smirked.
"Hey Bossman," he greeted, shrugging off the wall and walking over to sling an arm over his shoulders. "We were thinking, since the office was still under construction, you should have some free time to spend with us."
"I-"
"I’ve cleared your schedule for the day," Pepper said, waving as she walked off. Tony gaped after her.
"I-"
Bucky tugged him along, gently, easily enough that if Tony wanted he could slip away.
Steve joined them, hands in his pockets, shooting shy, embarrassed glances at Tony.
"I’m pretty sure this is… inappropriate. Since you work for me."
"Eh, whatever. We’ll figure it out," Bucky promised. And they would - but for now, it was enough just to get to spend time with him, all three of them together, and see if they even worked.
Bucky suspected they would, though.
