Meet Killigrew Fashion: A Lifestyle Menswear brand whose Polo's are definitely fit for the Fairways
Written by: Oli Berg from the High Fade
Working in the Canadian fashion industry has given me the opportunity to introduce myself to some amazing up and coming brands having met some very interesting people along the way. While attending a networking event during Toronto Fashion week, I noticed on a rack some very classy looking polo shirts amongst tee’s and cardigans as well.
So I made my way over to this section of the room to check out Killigrew Fashion, a lifestyle menswear brand whose polo shirts are definitely fit for the fairway.
A few weeks later I had the distinct pleasure to interview the Founder and Vice President of Killigrew, Mitch Darragh, to discuss what he and his mother/business partner Cleo have been up to.
Oliver: What does Killigrew mean and what does the brand’s logo represent?
Mitch: “I became interested in crows after watching a fascinating documentary on how highly intelligent this species of birds are. That resulted on conducting my own research and found that the name Killigrew refers to a Cornish chough (pronounced “chuff”); a member of the crow family known for its brilliant black feathers and that in Celtic mythology, there is the belief that King Arthur was reincarnated in the form of a crow.”
“That name Killigrew, and the story captivated me and I found myself sketching variations of a crow and crown. In addition, the notion - “Wear your own legend" kept coming up for me, which has become the tag line for the company.”
“The Killigrew crest design of the Crow and Crown represents a symbol of singularity and strength that is unique, elegant, and legendary.”
O: How long has Killigrew been around for?
M: “I started the company with my mother in 2008, however, we dedicated approximately two years for research. Since we settled on production in Peru, it took a bit of time and travel learning about the fabrics, best facilities to work with and making the appropriate contacts.
We also took this time to really focus on styles and the quality of the finishing and generally expanding our knowledge on the Men’s fashion industry.”
“Our first complete collection was created in 2010.”
O: Although Killigrew is not specifically a golf brand, what is it about the Killigrew polo’s that you think translates well for golfers?
M: “Golf apparel has seen a transformation through the use of colour, fit, and patterns. The young style of golfers Rickie Fowler & Ryo Ishikawa are a perfect representation of a more contemporary style in Golf fashion- I think they both have a great sense of style on the course. Our Killigrew polos are cut with the urban, contemporary man in mind that looks good on or off the Golf course.”
O: I have noticed some of your polo’s do have some performance material in them, something that most golfers look for today. Could expand a little bit on those items?
M: “Our polo’s are made with 100% Peruvian pima cotton - a natural and highly absorbent fiber that has the distinction of being carefully hand harvested.
It is this hand harvesting that gives Killigrew polos exceptional softness, brilliant luster, long lasting wear ability, are highly resistant to pilling, are highly absorbent keeping you cool and comfortable.
In addition, Peruvian Pima cotton are perfect for people who suffer from allergies or have sensitive skin, the garments are easy to maintain and will grow softer over time.”
O: While much of golf fashion is trending around performance materials and athleticism, there are still brands out there that are focused around more traditional styling, more of a lifestyle theme. And although you are not a golf brand at heart I think the design elements of your polo's would fall under that category. Care to briefly elaborate on this?
M: “Killigrew strives for style with a feel – good factor. We feel that luxury and comfort are a necessity in men’s garments. We reinterpret the classics with a modern twist and our polo’s and t-shirts are a perfect reflection of this. We focus on creating high quality, well-constructed, garments that retaining their look, fit, colour and sophistication for every day, every occasion and every man”
“Some of the details and finishes we focused on for the polos include a more slim fit and a slight shortening of the sleeve that adds to the modern appeal. A beautiful embroidered Killigrew crest and the use of contemporary and classic contrasting colour combinations that is also included on the placket of the shirt."
O: What’s next for Killigrew?
M: “Killigrew has decided to expand its collection this fall 2013 with a small selection of sweaters and Cardigans, made from 100% Peruvian baby Alpaca another luxurious, super soft and hard wearing fiber from Peru.”
