the easier snippet and trailer gives me "my songs know what you did in the dark" by fall out boy vibes omg
sous le ciel de paris était la solitude – paris is so many things to me, it’s like a life i’ve lived before this one. it always feels like there’s more to it than i can see, something vibrating just beneath the surface and if i reach out i’ll be short just an inch. it is magic. magic that is supposed to be shared so it can reach its full potential. everything feels more there, so loneliness too is enhanced until it has embraced you. as i walked the parisian streets i felt it tugging at me, had to stop, had to sit down and weep to let it out because it had found its way into every corner of my body and soul and was overflowing. and yet it gave me a ground to build myself up on, to learn what it meant to feel truly alone before realising that i wasn’t, because i had me.
and then came london and i thought found my way because i knew where it was. my thoughts still a jumbling mess i escaped to the beach and let the waves try and make sense of this mess. the rain there left me feeling ill and i spent two days trapped in my own head, bound to a hostel bed with cold medicine as my only friend. company arrived and it was like my world was in colour again. those were a few days full of existing in peace, of turning around to share a thought, share chocolate cake, share the magic that had been sitting still inside my heart since i left france. i got to let go, let someone else take control for just a little while and could’ve cried with the relief i felt. as we were sitting on top of a hill, in the sharp wind that came with nighttime i knew, knew that no matter what picture my worries were trying to paint– this was where i was supposed to be, right in this moment.
manchester was full of reflecting and of accepting. i got there and it felt as if i had been there a thousand times and i slept through a night for the first time since leaving home. but i didn’t find myself in this city. it always felt like i was standing just outside of it, looking at all the other people who seemed like they knew what they were doing and i couldn’t take that last step inside. but when i stood on the tram on my way back from seeing a film that left me heartbroken i understood that it was okay to not step in because it did not keep me out, did not keep me from falling in love.
edinburgh was like a haven that felt like it had been waiting for me to get there all along. it was different in all the right ways and every corner i turned made me hold on to admire for even just a second. those were slow days, soft days, silent days to pay attention, to sit down and just watch. there was magic there too, so different from paris in the way it felt, but magic nonetheless. i felt it with every steep step, uphill and downhill again, looking at the sea, at the clouds, at the sun and the rain that followed. it was everywhere and left me speechless, because there was nothing to say to accompany it. it had said everything i would want to say anyways.
back to london turned into a 6 hour train ride and i did not mind. the ride was scenic and the seat was comfortable. i was feeling like a cat, curled up on a windowsill in the sun, dozing off every now and then and looking at the ocean with tired eyes and a fluttering heart.
when i came back to the city that had stolen my heart so many times and refused to give it back now, i figured out what home away from home feels like. it wasn't the deep, special knowledge that this is home because that knowledge is tucked away, only to be felt in the house you grew up in, perhaps, or wherever your parents are. but it was the quiet contemplation of what could be. of feeling like i truly belong, a feeling i had chased for so many years, never knowing it was right here all along. it surrounded me in everything i did and these last days were as if someone had written a love song about me and this city. like "got nothing to tell you, i've got nothing much to say, only i'm glad to be here with you, on this heavenly, heavenly, heavenly, heavenly day"
i arrived back home on the same platform i left from. it felt bittersweet, almost cliché, as if i could see myself standing just a few feet away, saying goodbye to my family and stepping on the train with tears in my eyes. there were no tears in my eyes then but there would be later. later, when i realised what i had accomplished, when all the regrets fell away and it did not bother me anymore that the trip had not turned out to be exactly what i had imagined it to be or that i cut it short. i realised that i had left either way, against everything inside me, every voice screaming to stay, to hide, to never let any change into my life. i had defied myself and then made up with myself. learned to love myself in a way i never had before because there was no one else for quite a while. it feels bigger than it probably was, but i have never been prouder of something i've done just because i could, not because i had to. i chose to do this and i chose to come back home and i chose to love myself and i chose to battle myself and i chose myself. i chose myself over and over again.
