Kirby Lore: What is Canon?

Instead of focusing on a single topic, this time I’m just going to clear up what is and isn’t considered canon in the Kirby games. A lot of weird things take place in the games, so it can be a little difficult to pin down which events actually happened and which didn’t. I’m hoping to clear things up a little.

First things first, the Anime and Games have different continuity. Story elements and info that originate in the anime, such as Kirby’s origins, the Star Warriors, and Holy Nightmare Co. (Nightmare Enterprises in the dub) do not exist within the canon of the games. The anime is its own, self-contained story, and should be treated as such.

Second, the order of the games. For the most part, Kirby games are episodic. The stories and conflicts present are only relevant to the one game. However, there are instances where elements from previous games reappear in others, like the Dark Matter Trilogy (Dreamland 2, Dreamland 3, Kirby 64) or the Dimensional Mirror appearing in Triple Deluxe. An exact sequence of events is difficult to pin down, but for the most part, it can be assumed that the games take place in order of release.

The final point of contention is which content in the main releases are considered canon. Recently, the current director of the Kirby series, Shinya Kumazaki made a statement that the extra modes that are unlocked after a game’s main story (Meta Knightmare, True Arenta, ect.) are not canon. This is something that a lot of people dislike, as there’s a lot of great story elements that Kumazaki supposedly discounted. However, I don’t think what is or isn’t canon in those situations is entirely black or white. The way I see it, these modes are “what if” scenarios that reveal backstory or obscure story details through events that didn’t actually occur in the main storyline. For example: Dark Meta Knight using the Dimensional Mirror to corrupt Queen Sectonia and take indirect revenge against Kirby and his planet is canon. King Dedede scaling the Dreamstalk alone, discovering the Dimensional Mirror, defeating Dark Meta Knight and destroying the Mirror is not canon. Dedede Tour simply used the premise of “What if Dedede explored Floralia” to reveal critical plot elements that weren’t covered in the main story. This also means the Dimensional Mirror still exists in canon and can easily reappear. And yes, this means that as much as the fanbase likes to joke about it, Meta Knight never actually sank his own battleship. Canonically, the Halberd only sank once, and was salvaged during the events of Squeak Squad. 

Finally, I’d like to apologize for not being able to comment on the state of Team Kirby Clash Deluxe in this post. I haven’t actually put any money into the game and I’m stuck on the Greater Doomer fight. I’ll be sure to make a post about the game if I ever finish it. Hope you enjoyed the post.
