A Grimm Fairytale

Wood crackled and popped within the intricate fireplace as the rest of the house sat in utter silence. Without lights and nighttime quickly approaching, only the flames were left to illuminate the parlor room. Soon, untended, even that light would extinguish and then darkness would reign supreme. The owners of such a fine house never intended on leaving the fire burning for so long, especially with one of their dearest friends still left slumbering inside of the building. After all, if a single spark were to leap away from the coals and catch, not even the shrieking alarms would be enough to wake the young woman lying within the open coffin. Kai had personally seen to that.
And there she was, so motionless, so still, she looked dead. Slender arms were crossed, dainty hands resting upon her form as a scattering of moonbeams showered across her from the window high up above, casting her olive skin aglow. The addition of the pale light contradicted the natural warmth in her features in the eeriest of ways, only serving to further highlight her… condition. Were Elena confined within a glass coffin instead of a simple wood one — ironic considering how much had been used that day — then she would have resembled a beautiful, sleeping princess that much more than she already currently did.
In contrast, Kai stood blood soaked and splattered with gore, some of it his own, but most of it not. He still wore the tux from the wedding, the neckline tainted a dark shade of red and needing a serious wash. Across his face, specks of dried Caroline and Stefan were there so it seemed like her friends had made it to her fake funeral after all. All he needed to complete his villainous attire was a dark robe, horns, and a magic staff. The gender he figured could be negotiable.
Looking down on the prone body of Elena Gilbert, Kai didn’t even need to utter an incantation before the two of them were conveniently cloaked by a veil of his handy dandy magic. He hadn’t yet killed all of her friends, so it would be a bit of a nuisance if someone were to interrupt this little farewell of theirs. ❝Ah, Elena, Elena, look what has come upon you. Lying in a coffin with no one around to say goodbye. If only there was a way I could inform you of all the grisly deaths that have happened since your unfortunate accident.❞ For a moment, he feigned sadness. But just as quickly, the downward curve of his lips spread into a delighted grin and his blue eyes lit up with mirth. ❝Oh, that’s right. I can!❞
Reaching down to grip her hand, Kai closed his eyes and focused. The abilities of a vampire, he had come to find out, were far more advanced than he expected. To think that a dead person could inject themselves into another’s mind! It was something right out of a horror movie. Now if he could only make himself don a striped black-and-red shirt with a mask, everything would be so much more entertaining.
❝Hello, Elena.❞
