First Impression || Nami Uraraka ni, Meoto Biyori (2025)

Viewer's Discretion: major rom-com, fluff romance, slice-of-life, arranged marriage, historical romance, manga adaptation etc.

I honestly don't remember how I heard of this 2025 drama adaptation of Nami Uraraka ni, Meoto Biyori (A Calm Sea and Beautiful Days with You) but the moment I saw it on Viki, I immediately clicks on it and binge-watched the first 4 episodes during July 4th week. I haven't watched a GOOD J-DRAMA in a LONG TIME. I believe I started Eye Love You (2024) last year and stopped watching half way thru for some reason. And another one that I recently started was Kissing the Ring Finger (2023)...still trying to finish it right now but really don't like where the plot is going right now :( currently on episode 7-8. Anyways back to A Calm Sea and Beautiful Days with You, I am immediately hooked by the effort and small details that went into this production. The costumes to the cast members to the sets are so stunning and I'm not one to brag about Japanese Historical Dramas because I haven't watched enough besides the movie adaptations of Rurouni Kenshin.

Starting off with our main leads, Ebata Takimasa and Ebata Natsumi.

Honda Kyoya as Takimasa Ebata

I've only watched one of his dramas, Renai No Susume (2023), and omg I was not expecting him to be apart of this drama. From the first episode, he played Takimasa as a stoic, cold character but Takimasa is such a comedic, sweet, and adorable character. Despite his rough upbringing and his tragic past, we learn with Natsumi about why Takimasa is the way he is. He's a newly-wedded husband, who is a sub-lieutenant/lieutenant (depending on which translate you go off by) of the Japanese Imperial Navy, trying to balance his new lifestyle between his Naval duties and his husband duties at home.

Yoshina Kyoko as Natsumi Ebata / Natsumi Seikya

This is my first drama with Kyoko and I can say her portrayal of Natsumi is spot-on to the original manga. She played Natsumi as the klutz, caring and hard-working character. She is the third daughter of her family, the Seikya, and often overthinks every situation until told otherwise. Being wedded off in less than a week, she has much to learn when becoming a newly-wedded wife to a Naval Lieutenant...even meaning she'll have to understand his upbringing and not be afraid to ask Takimasa about his life.

Even with the side characters, they all have their own sparks that add into main plot as well as their own stories. (especially sweet Ikuko Shibahara, she is the glue that holds our main characters in place...she reassures Natsumi in every little situation when Natsumi is worried about Takimasa and is Takimasa's mother figure) I am currently watching episode 5-6 and is finally waiting for the possible second leads, Fumiko Yoshimori (played by Maika Yamamoto) and Ryunosuke Fukami (played by Yuta Koseki, to finally interact. The opening theme, Muchu by J-pop boy group BE:FIRST, is so soothing to listen to. It just melts my heart every time it plays at the beginning of each episodes and even when the instrumental plays during Takimasa's and Natsumi's gentle and tender moments together.

In conclusion, this drama is such a comfort drama; I can watch this every day without having to fast-forward to get to the next point. The director, producers and screenwriter really did their best to make this masterpiece of a adaption.

If you are looking for a slow-burn, soft, fluff drama, I say this is the one for you.

Welcome to Hopping Over the Bar where I keep myself accountable/sane by rewatching Amphibia while studying for the bar.

Day One of the Bar Exam. The essays.

Today I watched All In. Slightly awkward opening tbh, they were getting seperated at the end of the last episode, and now they're all together? No disection? And pretty easy escape. And having those herons be the literal same herons that attacked the Plantars years ago is a little much. But once all the set up is set up? Oh boy what an episode. Suitably epic. One might even say they went All In on this one. Frobo is a real MVP this episode btw. Even the random robot and heron fights are peak. And then the actual big showdowns? Peaker than Peak. PEAKER THANK PEAK I TELL YOU. Sasha fighting the ultimate control freak. Anne fighting a tyrant who is simultaneously a pathetically weak man. The lightning in the dual? The giant mech? The glowy blue powers fight? Grime losing an Arm, and showing even he has changed. Anne taking down Andrias with the power of kpop and friendship. The transfer from Darcy to Marcy's laugh. Marcy and Sasha both finding the strength to banish the Core. The Leif letter. The leif letter made me cry. The rererereunion between the girls. That cliffhanger. I realize I have just become Jack Black from The Minecraft Movie saying things that are on screen, but I really had forgotten just how good this episode is at tying together the themes of change and growth and not being devoured by the past. But there is still one final lesson…
