She honestly does not seem to realize just how small she is. Massive sword, throwing herself into the fray, making me work hard to keep her safe. I don’t know if she doesn’t realize how much danger she puts herself in every time she does that, or if she just doesn’t care. If it’s the latter, I’m worried. Especially after that fucker Solas left her. Beyond being the Inquisitor and being important to the world, she’s important to me.

That’s the first time I’ve ever let myself say that out loud or write it.

46. Can I kiss you right now? For Halliope? 👀👀

“What, on a ferry in public? In front of all these refugees?” Halla shakes her head. “They’re scared enough. They need to see a strong Inquisitor helping them, not one who needs comfort from–me.”

Calliope knows enough of Halla to know that me was not the way she initially meant to end that sentence. They step closer, slipping their fingers toward Halla’s, and they only look up at her when she jerks her hand away. “Halla?”

“I recognize the clothes; half of these people are from the Free Marches. I have…a reputation. I can’t let you be associated with that. They need to see someone strong.”

“And what if I said you make me feel strong?”

She almost looks like she expected that. She smiles, but it doesn’t reach her eyes. “I’d say you’re trying to get me to kiss you.”

“It’s the truth. I…Halla. Please?”

She’s resisting looking at them. Callie knows her well enough that her will will crumble if she looks. They want to grab her face and turn it to look at them; they want to make her look at them, make her kiss them. They need it. Half of the refugees are Marchers like Halla, but the other half are Dalish. And only half of them are alive. “Halla.”

She must have heard the shake in their voice this time, because she looks. She looks, and she softens. “Come on.” She takes their hand and ducks behind the ferry’s wheelhouse. “Hey. Talk to me, Princess.”

“We were too late,” Calliope whispers, tucking themself closer. “Their Keeper is dead; their First is barely an adult–we should have been sooner. What future is coming for them?” Gods, they hope Halla hears the question they don’t say: what future is coming for us?

“They have their elders, Callie,” Halla assures them. “They’ll help the new Keeper. And I’ll help you.” And she leans down, taking their face in her hands as tenderly as ever, and kisses them.
